Chapter 1092: Athena Goes To War

Chapter 1092: Athena Goes To War

It had been weeks now. Virgil, a soul cursed existence remained floating like a wisp of smoke outside the ruins that Athena had entered.

Ever since the first day that she had entered into this place, he had not been able to follow her.

It was not that he did not want to, but that he could not. According to the terms of his curse, he may never enter a city built by human beings.

Of course this was hell and this city was actually built by demons. However, the materials that made up its walls were literally human souls. As such, his curse prevented him from being a guardian even in certain parts of hell that he was eternally confined to.

However, he waited patiently at the peripheral of the city.

After all, patience was a virtue that a ghost like him had no choice but to eternally have. Then again, he could not help but worry about the consequences of Athena entering this dead city that she had sort to take refuge away from the aborted babies.

After all, it had a very very dark history, and although a half born, in his opinion, this city was still no one’s friend.

After all, the scariest most vile hell beasts called it their homes. Of course this was the Hell beasts that were first of their kind.

Notwithstanding, a lot of weird things had happened for the last few days that even he could not understand. An example would be the fact that he could still sense the life of one alive soul within.

Of course, this was hers. And then the Primordial Hell beasts although their aura still very much present have gone really quiet.

Almost as if they did not know that a living human was in their home.

And then there was the fact that he had seen Hell beasts go out of their way outside the city so that they could go and then hunt their kind.

Regardless of their names and abilities, Hell beasts were generally not aggressive. Not that they were not capable of it, but there was never much use for even so much as fighting amongst them.

After all, food in this place was in abundance. Even mating was not a problem for them.

The only time that they were relatively aggressive was when it came to devils and demons.

However, Demons had left hell for greener pastures and devils had bigger concerns on their plate.

But these were at least six hell beasts pulling in another hell beast that had been wrapped like a sausage.

Virgil was not sure why this was so, but he knew that the Hell beast that had been captured was a phoenix. A very rare hell beast. Even if he wanted to get to one, it would not be so easy.

After all, where they existed was trouble.

After that, he had felt the aura of the Phoenix disappear as if it had died, and then it came back again.

This had made him frown, but if a phoenix had truly died, then being reborn was expected of it.

However, its rebirth felt very strange.

Regardless, Virgil did not know what to think about it. Then again, he had indeed seen a lot of strange things in this place. After all, it was hell and he had been guardian here for hundreds of years.

There was practically nothing that he was going to see now that would surprise him. At least that was what he thought until he saw a figure walk towards him.

As she did, he looked closely. this was Athena, but there was something different about her. Her clothes had changed for one. It was no longer the rough heavy skin of the Baby hell beast.

Rather, it was a colourful mixture of gold and red feathers that gave a reflective shine every time her body swayed as she approached.

She still sat at the back of the Baby hell beast she had become very fond of.

As she approached, the atmosphere was heavy. It was like the weight in the air and the acknowledgement in the mind of all living things of an incredible storm was about to rain down on the earth.

It was both incredible and heavy.

Her clothing was made such that it prevented him from seeing her face. But he knew it was her.

However, in staring at her, his eyes widened in surprise.

The reason was because behind her were all kinds of hell beasts. The lowest of them being rank two and the highest being a rank six hell beast.

They were so many that Virgil estimated that they were at least a few hundred. Some flew in the sky, some raced the earth, their grotesque looking abominable form was a lot for the eyes to comprehend, and some even beyond shapes that human beings had discovered in the mortal world.

But they were all here. And they followed behind her.

Not too far, nor so close that walked beside her.

Even Virgil, in looking at this scene could feel the value and respect that they gave her.

The atmosphere was heavy. But Virgil did not move from his spot. His body like the smoke of a flame, wobbled in the air without a lower part to himself.

The Hell beats baby stopped just before Virgil.

The Old man still had a visible expression of surprise on his face.

"You seem happy to see me!" Athena spoke up, but the end of her voice had a subtle strange echo at the end of it. As if she was not the one talking, or a deeper inner voice aiding conversation.

Virgil raised a brow at her, "what... what did you do?" he looked around at the Hell beasts. "How did you get them to...?" he paused as his eyes scanned her even more.

It was not like the last time. As she was, he could not pin out her power level. She could now hide it from prying eyes.

"I thought you were dead!" he stated.

"Yes, I was. No..." she smiled a bit, "I did!"

Her answer confused him. However, before he could ask to clarify, loud sounds of clittering was heard.

It was like a giant loud army of ants were approaching.

Virgil turned about and frowned. "Remember when I told you not touch even one of them? It would seem like they still have problems with you. And now that you are out of the City of the first forgotten, they have come for their revenge."

Athena raised her head a little, however, no so much that her eyes were shown to the outside world.

Her senses spread in all direction.

She could see them clearly. Far ahead, they were over a million of them. Aborted babies with their twisted forms, all crying, ’mama’ as they rushed over like hungry ants to sugar.

"The only way to appease the m is by offering your womb for them to..." Virgil had not finished his words when he noticed that Athena had patted the back of the Hell beast baby, instructing it to bring her forward.

The Remaining Hell beasts stayed were they were, not moving, an army waiting for the orders of their commander.

While it was expected that these Aborted babies would stay away from Hell beasts, the bone to pick with Athena was just too much. After all, she was the reason that thousands of them had been consumed.

The sheer hatred for her already formed a black cloud of miasma above them that escorted their loud advance.

Athena left a subtle distance from her army of Hell beasts.

And then she raised her head. Virgil was behind her and thus had not seen what she now looked like, but he could see from behind as she pulled down her hoodie.

Her silky blond hair was luminous in this dark world, unmistakingly beautiful with the tip of it that cascaded down on the Hell beast like tongues of fire that would not burn out.

She raised a hand, and the energy in her body gathered, forming the Silhouette of a proud phoenix however in a flame behind her.

"Burn!" she whispered.

The Phoenix rushed forth. As it did, its wings and size got bigger and bigger, approaching the incoming millions.

By the time the aborted babies realized this, it was already too late.

The phoenix glided in their center, expanding outward in a sea of flames.

The cries and screeching cries of the Babies were heard but it was for only the second before they all evaporated into nothingness.

The flames burned everything, stained the already dark earth even darker.

Virgil was left stunned. He floated beside her, looking at the mess she had made of the land.

And then he turned to her. It was only now that he could see it, and his shock was even more. Athena’s hollow sockets were filled with leaking flames.

But what truly caught his attention was the rune inverted mark of ’U’ on her forehead. All of a sudden, he now understood why she had said that she had died.

After all, with what he was seeing, it was true...
