Eighteen’s Bed

Chapter 22.3

Chapter 22.3

"No, I think I really did something wrong. After that, he didn’t say anything, and even when I talked to him, he wouldn’t respond."

"And then he just lay down and fell asleep? In the middle of a conversation? Seriously?"

"No, I was watching the mood between us, wondering why things were so awkward, and then I stepped out for a smoke. When I came back, he was like this."

A girl named Soyeon glanced at me before looking away. I quickly moved between Kang Suhyeon and the girl, slipping into the space between them.

"……Let me see."

Repeating something I used to do at seventeen, now at twenty. If I were to be self-deprecating, I’d say I was a seasoned professional at this by now. I had some know-how when it came to situations like this. Yeah, I knew. The fact that I was like this frustrated me, and it made me irritable.

"Hey, Go Yohan. Wake up."

"……."

His body twisted away from my hand as I tried to shake his back. I heard him mutter something under his breath.

"Feeling nauseous… stop it."

His broad back curled up over the table. What is he, a caterpillar? That was when I was certain. Yeah, he was definitely drunk. A drunk Go Yohan became surprisingly timid.

"Looks like he’s really drunk."

"Right? So that’s why the atmosphere was weird earlier."

Soyeon, the girl, flailed around anxiously, clearly flustered.

"What should we do? Should we send him home?"

"Yeah? Do you happen to know where he lives?"

This time, the person asking was Kang Suhyeon. How transparent. Why did he suddenly act like this was his golden opportunity? His face was practically glowing with excitement as he looked at me.

"Uh, yeah, I do, but…."

"Then you can take him home! Alright, Yohan goes with Jun, and the rest of us who are still sober will keep drinking!"

He cut me off so suddenly that I barely had time to react. Wow. His motives were so crystal clear that I had no words. So obvious. His intentions were as transparent as spring water. I wanted to scoff and tell him no, but the fact that it involved Go Yohan changed the situation.

"Before you all keep drinking, call a taxi."

"Huh? You’re taking a taxi? Isn’t it surcharge time?"

"I’m not carrying him all the way home on my back."

"Well… yeah, that makes sense."

All seven pairs of eyes, including mine, fell on Go Yohan’s enormous back. One of Kang Suhyeon’s friends stretched his arms out dramatically as if measuring his broad shoulders, then groaned.

"Yeah. Definitely take a taxi."

"……."

"Just put it on your friend’s card. It’ll be fine."

What an asshole. With a deep sigh, I grabbed Go Yohan’s shoulders with both hands. He didn’t budge. Not even an inch. Seriously, why was he so heavy? He looked skinny, but his frame was huge, and his body was packed solid. I considered whether I could actually carry this lump of a person to the taxi, but I quickly concluded that it was impossible. Damn bastard. If he knew his body was this big, he should’ve stopped drinking sooner. Did he not think about the people who’d have to take responsibility for him? What a selfish piece of shit. What the hell was so fun that he had to drink like water? My irritation flared, and I nearly strangled him on the spot.

Then, as I shifted my grip, his thin T-shirt slid down slightly, revealing a scar. A brown, faded scar.

"……Fuck."

I loosened my grip on his shoulders. Then, carefully, so no one around us could see, I adjusted his clothes back in place. That was when an unexpected voice cut in. This time, it was the girl who had been agreeing with everything Soyeon said. Or maybe it was just my imagination, but I swore she had locked eyes with me for a second.

"Actually, since it’s already late, should we just wrap it up here? We can still barely catch the last bus if we leave now."
