Eighteen’s Bed

Chapter 26.2

Chapter 26.2

I forced my creaking body to move today and headed toward the school café. It was our weekly meeting, just to discuss assignments with Kang Suhyeon, excluding lectures. As soon as the topic changed, Kang Suhyeon lost interest and tried to subtly back out of our meeting. Today was no exception; it was one of those days.

"I have to go take care of my grandfather, he’s going into surgery (crying). You understand, right?"

"Yeah, don't come."

For context, Kang Suhyeon’s grandfather passed away twice earlier this semester. And one of her profile pictures on social media was of a cake with 'Happy Birthday, Grandpa' written on it. How many grandfathers does this idiot have? At least four in total, I guess.

"Thanks? I love my grandfather too much, I can't help it?"

"?"

I clicked my tongue and turned around. I guess I’ll have to make this silly assignment look as decent as possible. It was a topic I suggested impulsively, and while writing it, I felt like it was some kind of show-off topic that even middle schoolers wouldn’t use... I started feeling disillusioned and was about to change the whole thing. But this time, it was the professor who got in the way.

"Why didn’t you do what I complimented you for?"

"Sorry, but I think the topic is too monotonous and childish."

"How many times do you plan on changing the topic in one semester?"

And then he gave me that disappointed look. But how was I supposed to insist on changing it after that? Me, who’s secretly quite petty, could only mumble a simple "Sorry" and became as silent as a mute. Maybe I should just try to win with quantity. Gripping my forehead, I walked down the overgrown path in front of the Humanities building.

How the hell can I make this stupid topic sound sophisticated and cool? Should I just slap a big picture of Go Yohan’s face on it? People are weak to visual stimuli, after all. With Go Yohan’s face, I could at least distract some attention.

I looked at my watch. Today was Go Yohan’s back-to-back lecture. There were still two hours left before his class ended. Maybe I should just go home first. Standing alone, I suddenly had a brilliant thought.

"Should I sneak into his class?"

Now that I think about it, I’ve never seen Go Yohan in class before. There were no overlapping classes. What floor was his Humanities class on again? Was it the 3rd floor? I quickly turned on my phone and hurried toward the shortcut to the Humanities building.

I had to slip in during the break to avoid being caught by the professor...

I guess I was in too much of a hurry. My foot caught on a protruding paving stone.

"Ah!"

Luckily, I didn’t fall. But as my body jerked, a sharp pain shot through my already sore back. The phone in my hand fell to the ground. The phone bounced and slid down the slope. Oh no, not now. I couldn’t even gather myself and ran down to get it. My lower back felt like it was going to collapse.
