Chapter 105: Ghost
Chapter 105: Ghost
Hilda had no choice but to believe Reeva’s words. However, the more she became aware of Reeva’s capabilities, the more mysterious his existence seemed.
"Are you just leaving Arthur there? Why not bring him with us and train him to become a mystic?"
"His power is too weak; training him manually would take far too long an investment. It’d be better if he came to us after he completed his training."
"...."
There were pros and cons to both approaches, and Reeva chose to wait it out. He needed people, sure, but the old man still had his obligations to his knight order and was the most authoritative figure now that Gully had died.
Arthur would likely want to settle all of Gully’s assets before dismissing the knight order. They could still be transferred to the new landowner, and some of the knights might not feel the same when serving another master.
During the transfer, some of the knights might leave to find a better master to serve. Reeva bet that Arthur would likely leave the knight order; he could see a fire in the old man’s eyes—a fire of vengeance.
"What do we do next, master?"
"We go get Theia first."
Truthfully, Hilda had almost forgotten that Theia wasn’t there.
------------
They arrived at the central district when the night had already fallen long ago. Reeva wanted to rest; fighting a demon was rather exhausting, even when it was only a small demon. On the danger scale, this one was relatively safe to fight.
But still, it was a demon. Most people would die facing such a menace. Theia and Hilda also looked visibly exhausted; they had to walk all the way from Gully’s residence, which was outside the city.
However, they could not rest yet. Reeva had a sneaking suspicion that he would catch a certain person.
They arrived at Holen’s office. At this hour, it was usually closed, but tonight was a little different. The lights were still on, and if you looked through the glass window, you could see the silhouette of a man scrambling inside.
Reeva smiled as he opened the door. Holen quickly turned to Reeva after hearing the door open. The "best detective" couldn’t believe what he was seeing; his face turned pale as if he had seen a ghost.
"In all my years! I never thought I would hallucinate this much... must be the effect of the demon," his voice trembled. However, the visage of Reeva didn’t vanish. It walked forward until it was right in front of Holen.
Holen’s body shifted a little, unsure of what he was seeing. At that moment, Reeva threw a punch at the man’s face.
Holen’s whole body swayed, and he flopped to the ground.
"Oh! So my dear friend is still alive after all! I never doubted you," Holen quickly said, his hand checking his cheek, feeling the force of the punch.
"But you doubted me enough to run away."
Reeva wasn’t that mad since he would have done the same in Holen’s shoes, but he felt like he needed to punch the guy.
"Haha," Holen could only manage a dry laugh. "But hey, at least you’re still alive. About that thing—is it still out and about?" Holen asked, his voice still shaky. It was the first time he had encountered a demon—at least one this close-up.
"We’ve already dealt with it," Reeva answered.
"Oh..." Holen looked impressed. "Do we continue the investigation?"
The detective did not doubt in his mind that their operation was real, And the heretic was real and not a made-up theory. But the problem lay in their safety. In his line of work, he valued it greatly, otherwise, he would have perished long ago.
"It’s my goal to stop the cult. So I’m not stopping here."
"..."
Holen looked Reeva in the eyes and saw determination. The best detective couldn’t help but sigh. "Fine, I’ll help, but this time I won’t go to any potential heretic places. What the hell was that anyway? Why did Gully turn into a demon? The last time I went there, he was normal...
at least a person, not a demon."
Reeva thought about what could have happened, trying to recall something from the book.
"There is an old art for mystics called a binding vow. It’s used by mystics to make a promise or a deal using their mystic power as a base. If the promise or deal is broken, that mystic power will also run rampant."
"So he turned into a demon because we asked too many questions?" Holen didn’t fully grasp the intricacies of mysticism but understood enough.
"Yep. I think we touched on a taboo topic that Gully had used a binding vow on."
"There is something that’s turning people into believers..."
Holen’s mind raced. The fact that they didn’t want that information to leak meant there was something that turned a normal Sun God believer into a White Demon believer.
"We infiltrate the cult to find out? Do you need us to go with you?" Theia asked, curious about the operation they had discussed earlier regarding Reeva going alone.
"Too risky," Reeva said. "I’ll go by myself as we planned. If everything goes right, no one will get hurt."
"Hilda?" Theia turned to Hilda, hoping she’d oppose the idea, but the maid didn’t seem opposed to it. "Ugh, whatever, I have to go see Ulla, right?"
"Yep. Also, take this, you might need it." Reeva handed her the white slate with mystic properties. "Just throw it at a mystic who’s using their power. It’ll suck it right up."
They talked with Holen a bit more before heading back to their hotel. The group could really use some rest after everything they’d been through that day.
--------
Reeva opens his eyes in a familiar place, it is the field of reeds that always stretches across infinite space.
The old man is nowhere to be found like last time. Reeva could do nothing but get up and walk. along the field of endless reeds like always.
