Chapter 99: Holding the mystic force
Chapter 99: Holding the mystic force
Saving people was never really his priority. As a man from the 20th century, he was used to safety and people having much better living conditions than ever before. However, here, it’s different. There’s no social media to report if someone goes missing, and no medical welfare that modern knowledge offers. So he never really had to care about it. If they’re fated to die, they will die.
However, In this world, he had to think about saving people. Because he has to actively choose to do it.
The same kind of mystic force attracts a similar mystic, just like he was with happiness. This meant he had a way of drawing the monster right to him. The mystic slate in his pocket could be infused to exert its mystic properties. He was certain it would draw the monster’s attention.
However, that would put him and Theia in danger, and he wasn’t a fan of sacrificing himself for the greater good. Like the happy demon he was, he valued his own happiness over anything else. And one can’t be happy without being alive.
Yet, he also valued the happiness of others. Less important than his own, but still significant. And with every second he hesitated, people’s happiness was being torn away before his eyes.
He gritted his teeth and slipped his hand into his pocket. A bit of yellow mist flowed from the Yellow Circle inside his body to the edge of his hand. The white slate happily absorbed it. The slate expanded slightly, emitting some of its mystic properties.
The monster promptly noticed this. Its instincts led it to look toward him and change its direction—from slaughtering the knights to heading for the window outside.
It’s working.
Reeva smiled as the monster approached, dropping from the two-story building. He felt a small sense of triumph for saving some of the people inside, but now the problem was transferred to him.
He had no choice but to run. He did his best to flee, carrying Theia on his back. He wondered if it would be safer to leave her behind since the monster was following him, but he wasn’t willing to take that chance.
He took out his trusty phone and activated [Experiment]. He knew he was going to need it somehow. He just knew it.
Reeva ran through the garden and into the orange farm, hoping it would slow the monster down. He quickly navigated the rows of orange trees, changing lanes whenever possible. Glancing back, he saw that the white demon was struggling to close the distance. It was fast, and Reeva’s injured leg wasn’t helping, but the trees provided enough obstacles to slow the creature down, if only for a moment.
However, that moment was brief. The demon realized it could climb over the orange trees. The rows of trees weren’t wide enough to prevent the monster from using its tentacled mouth to hop from tree to tree, closing the distance faster than Reeva had anticipated. He knew he couldn’t hold off much longer; the demon’s bite would be devastating.
Every part of the demon was imbued with mystic force, and Reeva knew this firsthand since he could transform into one himself. But he needed to exhaust the demon’s mystic force—either by inflicting significant damage or by using another mystic force. Theia didn’t have an attack that could make the mystic forces clash, but Reeva did.
He was reluctant to use it because he wouldn’t be able to control himself once transformed. However, he doubted his power would kill anyone outright. The worst that could happen was people laughing so hard they’d run out of air, but they’d likely faint before anything fatal occurred.
He settled Theia a safe distance away and dashed off in another direction, holding the white slate firmly and injecting a bit of power into it to bait the monster. Sure enough, it followed him rather than Theia. It seemed the novel was right about similar powers attracting each other.
He ran as far as he could into the middle of the orange tree farm, where there were fewer people. Most of the workers had already fled at the sight of the demon.
Once he reached the center, Reeva took a deep breath, preparing himself for the transformation. He had been experimenting with this for days. After dark, he tried transforming into a demon right before the [Experiment] app reset at midnight. He wanted to control his demon form, so he began the transformation.
During these experiments, Reeva discovered something: the power spread from the Yellow Circle, where he stored most of the yellow mist, throughout his entire body, transforming him into a demon. He had a theory that he could transform into a half-demon and retain control over his body, and he’d been trying to achieve this ever since.
Most of his attempts had ended in failure because the mystic force was too overwhelming to control once released. It was too fast and too unpredictable. But this time, he had to succeed. Th had been through his multiple time now.
He focused his coldness on the Yellow Circle inside his body, touching upon the yellow mist. At that moment, he generated more of the yellow mist and immediately created a wall of coldness in his head, cutting off his neck from the rest of his body.
The yellow mist spread rapidly, covering his entire body in mere seconds. His muscles stiffened as they were infused with mystic force. The yellow mist seeped out, filling every part of him.
This was the critical part—he had to prevent it from reaching his brain. The coldness gathered around his neck was meant to block the mystic force from his head. Even though the coldness managed to block some of the mystic power, a small amount still seeped through. He had encountered this situation before and knew how to manage it.
He was on the verge of success, but the demon had other plans. The trees were no longer an obstacle.
