Chapter 190 190: Baiting The Prophet

"Are you alright?" Elias asked, staring at Lilith in concern. "You seem to be doing… well."

"Yeah." Lilith nodded, her voice low. "My emotions are back. The church unintentionally fixed it."

"Is it permanent?" Hope bloomed in Elias' eyes as he stared at Lilith.

"Unfortunately, no." She answered. "That's why I need to be careful. I mustn't use too much power. So, the both of you will be at the forefront. Can you handle it?"

Elias glanced at Valen, who was standing to the side, arms crossed, a neutral expression on his face. "We can." He nodded. "With Valen as our vanguard, this should end exactly the way we want it to."

"Good." Lilith nodded, glancing at Valen. "Anything else to take care of before we begin?"

"Just one." Elias answered with a smile. "It's good to have you back, Lilith."

They shared a smile and the moment was over.

"Valen?" Lilith nodded at the man. "After you."

The sound of steel sliding out of its sheath filled the tavern, right before Valen kicked the door open. Then, he strode out into the street, twirling his twin swords at his side.

Lilith and Elias stepped out behind him to a sight they already expected. The streets of Rainhold were filled with nothing but chaos. Smoke filled the air from the various fires burning around the place. Distant screams reached their ears, of survivors who had been found by the infected.

There was blood painting the streets, with corpses, those who had died before getting infected blood, lining every corner.

If Ren was there, he would've described it all as an apocalypse. A zombie outbreak where the zombies were much more powerful than the average humans with their ability to blow up.

The first zombie shambled into view at the end of the street, and as soon as it caught sight of them, it threw its head back and howled madly into the sky.

The surrounding zombies were kicked into action and before long, zombies were streaming down both ends of the street, screaming their lungs out.

A smirk appeared on Lilith's face as she raised a hand, materializing a translucent wall of soul energy on one side of the street, blocking it off. The zombies would have to come from only one direction if they wanted to truly attack them.

At the other side of the street, the zombies finally reached the first human wall. Valen surged forward, his blades singing as they danced through the air like a tornado, cutting down the infected left and right.

And as expected, there was an explosion.

Valen stabbed his blades into the ground, creating an anchor for himself as the zombie detonated. Just as the force of the explosion passed, blood splattering everywhere, he raced towards the main horde.

Red veins bloomed to life on his face as the plague seeped into his body and before it could do more, he activated his detonation, taking out the forefront of the horde.

The stragglers raced past the explosion, screeching as they attacked the remaining two uninfected humans.

Elias exhaled with his eyes closed, his flame-wreathed sword held in front of him. The zombies, taking it as a sign of giving up, lunged, sailing through the air towards the man.

Elias' eyes snapped open and his sword swung through the air in a single short arc. Flames erupted from the blade to meet the zombie in mid-air, incinerating it. The fire moved past the burnt zombie to the two more behind it, burning their bodies to a charred crisp.

He kept swinging his sword, using it to incinerate the monsters before they could get into explosion range. They were fast, but not fast enough to escape his flames.

Valen reformed, taking back his role as the vanguard. One of the zombies screeched as it reached towards him, but the man simply slammed his boot into the zombie, pinning it to the ground. A second later, one of his swords pierced through its skull, putting it out of its misery.

"More coming from the south!" Elias warned.

Lilith's eyes narrowed. Her white Chosen cloak was still affixed to her shoulders, a spotless white. Apart from the wall that the zombies were still trying to break through with their explosions, she hadn't even used Soul Dominion.

Well, there was time for everything.

She raised both hands, drawing a miniscule amount of soul energy, sending it screaming through the air at the approaching horde. The front line of infected staggered, screeching as their souls were torn apart within their bodies. Some dropped instantly, while others writhed on the cobblestones before collapsing.

They were doing their job. The Red Prophet was beginning to notice as his zombies died in droves.

The zombies poured in thicker, more than Valen could hold off on his own. Before long, Elias was also constantly fighting, with even Lilith joining in to help hold their ground.

Then, the air shifted.

The street fell suddenly quiet, the infected freezing mid-lunge, their bodies going rigid. Lilith raised her hand, unsure, soul energy still writhing at her fingertips.

The sound of slow footsteps traveled to their ears and their eyes snapped forward as a man walked out of the shadows at the end of the street, towards them.

He was tall, wearing torn brown robes, his skin bloated and pale. His eyes glowed an unnerving bright red. And unlike the others, he was smiling.

He stopped a few paces away from where Valen had previously exploded, tilting his head as if he was studying them.

"You're not who I want." He said, his voice deeply wrong. This was not his actual form but one of his zombies serving as a container for his consciousness. "But I suppose you'll do."

Lilith stepped forward. "Red Prophet."

The man's grin widened. "Ah. You're all here. Mostly. That saves time."

Elias brandished his flaming sword, a smirk on his face. "Looking for someone?"

The Red Prophet laughed. "Yes, actually. Terence Ross. Where is he?"

Elias chuckled, Lilith said nothing, and Valen didn't even blink.

The Prophet sighed, almost theatrically. "No answer? Shame."

He raised a hand. The infected around them began to tremble.

"Do you know what I hate more than Terence Ross?" He asked, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Nothing."

He lifted his gaze to the sky.

"I was going to wait." He said. "Give this little city a chance to scream. But no. If I can't find the Stolen, I'll just destroy the entire city."

He snapped his fingers.

The clouds above stirred.

Lilith's eyes widened. "He's calling—"

The sounds of screeches filled the air, as if from a million beaks.

Thousands of black shapes filled the air, infected birds, eyes glowing red. They swarmed above like a living storm, blotting out the light of the sun.

The Red Prophet smiled, teeth too white and too sharp. "Let's destroy Rainhold."
