?Chapter 124: Chapter 125 Comforting Others_1 Chapter 124: Chapter 125 Comforting Others_1 Muniang slowly awakened to find herself already in her own room, with Mrs. Lin sitting worriedly at the head of the bed. As soon as Muniang woke up, Mrs. Lin hurriedly asked, “Muniang, how do you feel? Are you feeling any better?”
Muniang rubbed her head and struggled to sit up, “Where’s Li Cheng?”
When Mrs. Lin heard Muniang was still worried about Li Cheng, tears started to fall down, “You silly child, why don’t you care a little for your own body? Yesterday, you were busy all day without a meal, and you kept watch at the foot of the mountain all night long; do you even care about your life? Chengzi and Qiangzi have already gone up the mountain to search for him; if they find him, they will surely return.”
Muniang’s eyes widened, “Li Cheng hasn’t come back? But, before I passed out, I clearly saw—”
Qingya quickly said, “Lady, it was Mr. Wu, he’s still in the outer parlor right now. Doctor Jin was personally invited by Mr. Wu to come help.”
Indeed, Qingya was feeling a bit nervous herself. Mr. Wu seemed more anxious than they were when their lady fainted. He even took the trouble to invite the most famous Doctor Jin from town. After waiting for about an hour, he had not mentioned leaving, and was eagerly waiting outside. If it weren’t for the concern of proper conduct between men and women, he probably wished he could stand guard by the bedside.
However, Qingya only dared to think these thoughts in her heart, careful not to utter an extra word. A careless statement might ruin her lady’s reputation.
Upon hearing it wasn’t Li Cheng who had returned, Muniang became even more anxious and immediately wanted to get out of bed, “It’s been a day and a night; why hasn’t he come back yet? Could it really be that something’s happened?”
But before she could get up, a wave of dizziness hit her head, and Mrs. Lin quickly pushed her back down, “You stay put. Chengzi and Qiangzi are seasoned hunters and know the mountain well. Don’t go and add to the chaos; don’t ruin your health.”
The matter of Li Cheng also distressed Mrs. Lin, but seeing her daughter treat herself so harshly was even more heartbreaking, wasn’t it?
Just then, a voice came from the courtyard, “Muniang, Auntie, I’ve brought back Li Cheng!”
Upon hearing these words, Muniang sprang up from the bed, hastily rushing out without even properly putting on her shoes, with Mrs. Lin too worried to stop her, hurrying after her to check as well.
But when they stepped outside, Muniang was stunned: wasn’t the bloody person being carried on Wang Qiang’s back Li Cheng himself? His complexion pale, consciousness blurry, and his body badly maimed, Muniang’s heart felt as if it had been squeezed.
“What happened? Quick, carry him inside, call for the doctor!” Muniang almost cried out, seeing his condition; her heart ached terribly. This fool, he had risked his life for her!
The people hurriedly carried him into the room, fortunate Doctor Jin who had treated Muniang was still there, so there was no need to delay by calling for another doctor.
After examining Li Cheng’s wounds, Doctor Jin stroked his beard and sighed, “There are injuries all over his body; it seems he has suffered a lot.”
“Doctor, do you think he can be awakened?” Muniang asked anxiously.
“I’m going to treat his wounds immediately. He is running a fever right now, we need to act fast; otherwise, if the fever worsens, it could be dangerous. All of you who aren’t needed, get out, don’t get in the way.”
Doctor Jin had quite a temper. Although Muniang wanted to stay and help, she saw that his disciple was doing the job well and efficiently, and she herself had no medical skills; she decided not to, not wanting to distract Doctor Jin with her presence. She anxiously glanced over at Li Cheng one more time and reluctantly went outside to wait.
Outside, Wang Qiang and several other strong men from the village carried in a large black bear, which must have been dead for sure, its head giving off a particularly gruesome sight.
Li Cheng sighed, “We found Erliang at the bottom of a valley, he must have been too injured after fighting the bear, carrying too much weight on the slippery rainy path, and rolled down the slope. When we found him, he wasn’t clear-headed, yet his hands were still tightly grasping the dead Dahei bear, as if he feared someone would take it from him. It took us a great effort to pry his hands open.”
Muniang felt a blockage in her heart, seeing Erliang’s injuries now, she knew he must have staked his life in the fight against Dahei.
Although Li Cheng had always thought Erliang was not bright and had treated him like a child, today’s event changed his view. Instantly, he felt Erliang was manlier than anyone else, making all of them rough men look unworthy in comparison. More importantly, Erliang’s feelings for Muniang, Li Cheng, who had once harbored feelings for her too, realized by comparison, his own past timid affections were truly not worth mentioning.
Wu Haoli, watching from a distance the anxious look on Muniang’s face, also wore a touch of desolation, ultimately not stepping forward to disturb her. He had hurried here, yet she hadn’t even spared a word for him.
After an unknown length of time, Doctor Jin finally came out, wiping the sweat from his forehead, only to say, “He’s finally out of danger, and he’s a bit more conscious now. I’ve prescribed a few remedies. Send someone with me to town to fetch the medicine. Take good care of him and nourish his injuries, and I will return in a few days to see how he is.”
Muniang quickly agreed, called a servant to follow and get the medicine in town, and lifting her skirt, went in to see Erliang.
His complexion, by now, wasn’t as frightening as before. There was finally a trace of color, and Muniang, looking at his pale face stained with mud and rainwater, appearing even more haggard, began to wipe his face with a cloth dipped in warm water, her tears falling involuntarily.
Since arriving here, this was the first time Muniang truly cried out of sadness. Whatever difficulties she had faced before, she had dealt with them calmly. But now, for his sake, she was flustered. Erliang, in a daze, watched Muniang with red eyes, whispering, “Lady, don’t cry. I hunted a bear for you, we’ll sell it for good money, I’ll protect you, Lady.”
Muniang’s tears fell even harder, “You fool, did you risk your life for this? What if something had truly happened?”
Erliang strained to curve his lips into a smile, “I’ll protect Lady, Lady need not fear.”
Muniang glared at him indignantly, “If there ever is a next time, I will not care for you!”
Erliang obediently agreed. His injuries were severe, and he couldn’t stay conscious for long, soon drifting into a heavy sleep.
Muniang made sure he was sleeping peacefully before she remembered there was still a “guest” inside the house. She properly tucked him in with the blanket before stepping out.
Muniang left the room and headed straight for the parlor. Sure enough, Wu Haoli was still there sitting. She managed a smile, “What kind of wind has blown the Eldest Young Master here?”
“You remembered me?” Wu Haoli joked, his tone carrying a trace of wistfulness, especially seeing the redness around Muniang’s eyes, knowing she had cried, his heart felt even heavier.
Muniang was startled, not thinking much of it, she casually responded, “Our house is in quite the mess right now.”
Wu Haoli raised an eyebrow, “I heard your Embroidery House collapsed.”
Muniang said irritably, “Can you say something comforting for once?” Pointing out people’s wounds as soon as you arrive, if one didn’t know Wu Haoli’s nature, they might really think he was here to kick her while she was down.
Wu Haoli directly took out a stack of silver notes and placed them on the table, “Is this comforting enough?”
