?Chapter 61: Chapter 062 Difficult to Distinguish Right from Wrong_1 Chapter 61: Chapter 062 Difficult to Distinguish Right from Wrong_1 Nanny Zhang spoke with a cold voice, “Qiao Muniang, don’t think that just because you have a way with words, you can talk your way out of this. The facts are right before our eyes. Li Cheng dares to act but not to own up to it. Our family is not to be trificked with either. We can bring this to the village chief for judgment if it comes to that!”
Muniang’s hands, hidden in her sleeves, had clenched into fists, her nails digging into her flesh without her even feeling it, exuding a chilling aura. She was no fool, realizing that Nanny Zhang wasn’t simply trying to agitate her by wagering her daughter’s chastity; their real desire, she feared, was likely to have Li Cheng take a mistress!
She could believe in Li Cheng’s loyalty to her, but she absolutely would not allow any woman to scheme to come between them!
Seeing that Muniang remained silent, Nanny Zhang grew complacent, her voice growing shrill, “What’s the matter? Scared? Don’t think that just because your family has some money, you can act all high and mighty. Here in Tupo Village, you need to follow our village rules. Your husband has done such a thing, ruining my innocent daughter, and he thinks he can get off so easily!”
Li Cheng, seeing that Muniang was not responding, grew anxious, “Muniang, let’s call the village chief. He’s fair and just, he’ll surely uphold justice!”
Muniang’s gaze met the triumph in Nanny Zhang’s eyes, and her heart grew colder. What good would bringing the village chief do now? Given the situation, Nanny Zhang would certainly demand the village chief to take charge.
Li Cheng gently tugged at Muniang’s sleeve, “My wife, I am sorry.”
Muniang’s lips were tightly pressed, and she said nothing, gripping Li Cheng’s hand tighter. She wasn’t a saint; she couldn’t remain calm and composed in every situation, especially as Nanny Zhang had intentionally targeted Li Cheng, knowing full well he was her Achilles’ heel.
A storm raged in Muniang’s heart, anger raging like a fierce fire, but her face still had to maintain a mask of calm. She couldn’t lose her composure; otherwise, she would lose everything.
“Let’s call the village chief!” Muniang’s voice was cool as she met Nanny Zhang’s triumphant gaze with resolute eyes.
The village chief arrived quickly and Muniang led him into the main hall. What should have been an atmosphere of joyful celebration for the finished work was now eerily silent.
The village chief, who had already learned about the situation on his way over, looked at Muniang with a mix of helplessness and sympathy.
Clearing his throat twice, the village chief said, “I’ve heard about what happened. Li Cheng, did you do anything to Niu Qingfang?”
“No! I did nothing!”
However, Niu Qingfang began to sob, “If not you, then who? It was just the two of us, and you insisted on touching me against my will. I couldn’t stop you and had to cry out. Now everyone knows my body has been touched, my purity taken. You, however, are outright denying it. How am I supposed to live now? I might as well be dead!”
As she spoke, she rushed toward the wall, but Niu Tieshu quickly held her back, “Sister, it’s not you who should die, it’s him! Don’t do anything foolish, I’ll definitely get justice for you!”
Muniang watched with cold eyes, her voice icy, “The matter hasn’t been clarified yet. It’s too early to decide who should die.”
Nanny Zhang blustered, “Oh, I’ve never seen such shamelessness. Everyone saw what happened with their own eyes, and now you still want to deny it?”
“Seeing is not always believing! At the time of the incident there wasn’t a third person present, Niu Qingfang claims my husband touched her, whereas my husband denies it, both clinging firmly to their statements. The situation is clearly hard to discern right from wrong, so how can you simply conclude that my husband is at fault just because Niu Qingfang shed a few tears?!”
Muniang’s cool voice rose, silencing everyone in the room. Even the village chief looked at Muniang in disbelief. For a woman to remain composed in such a situation was one thing, but for her to see things so clearly and thoroughly put even the village chief to shame.
Nanny Zhang was momentarily stunned, but she was shrewd and quickly retorted, “Then what about the state of disarray my daughter finds herself in now?”
Muniang let out a cold laugh, “What about it? Shouldn’t you be asking your daughter instead? Could it be she saw that our family is wealthy and shamelessly tore her own clothes to throw herself at a man?!”
“Qiao Muniang don’t spout nonsense! My sister is a pure and innocent virgin, how could she ever do such a thing!” roared Niu Tieshu.
The village chief also cleared his throat twice and said to Muniang, “Muniang, I know you are angry, but you should not make baseless accusations. A girl’s reputation is her life.”
The village chief truly was a kind-hearted man. Although he also disapproved of Nanny Zhang and her family, he still remained very fair in handling the issue.
“The village chief himself says one mustn’t make baseless statements, so what about their entire family ganging up to pin baseless accusations on my husband!” Muniang’s tone was fierce.
“This….” The village chief found himself at a loss for words. Although the matter appeared clear to everyone, Muniang’s rebuttal somehow made it seem otherwise.
Nanny Zhang said, “Hey, on what basis do you say this matter is baseless? Just because your Erliang claims he didn’t do it, you decide that my daughter had it coming?!”
Muniang glanced at her, “And on what basis do you claim my husband acted inappropriately towards your daughter? Just because she told you my husband violated her?”
“You….” Nanny Zhang was momentarily speechless and cursed, “Who doesn’t know that Erliang is a fool, how can his words be trusted?!”
“Then who’s to say that Niu Qingfang didn’t target my husband knowing he’s a fool and easy to bully, deliberately concocting such a scheme to latch onto my husband, a walking money tree?!” Muniang did not back down, pressing her case.
Niu Qingfang’s complexion shifted. She had known Qiao Muniang was not easy to deal with, but hadn’t anticipated her to be so challenging.
Seeing that they could not argue any longer, Nanny Zhang stopped entangling with Qiao Muniang and turned to the village chief, wiping away tears, “Village chief, what sin has this old lady committed to be bullied in such a way? It’s one thing for me, half in the grave, to suffer, but my pure and innocent daughter has been ruined and yet denied justice. Her life is destroyed! How am I to live?!”
The village chief felt troubled and, after soothing Nanny Zhang, looked up to see Muniang still resolute.
Seeing the village chief’s hesitation, Nanny Zhang, wiping her tears, continued, “Village chief, can the words of a fool be trusted? My daughter’s clothes were a mess because of him! He denies it now, most likely out of fear of Qiao Muniang, that fierce woman! Her ferocity is well-known in the village, she won’t stand for any dissent, and since Erliang is not sharp, he’s under her tight control. Surely he fears that if he admits to it, he will be subject to her discipline!”
