Chapter 63 - 63 064 Return of the Yin_1
?Chapter 63: Chapter 064: Return of the Yin_1 Chapter 63: Chapter 064: Return of the Yin_1 Although Nanny Zhang was resentful at heart, she had reached this point where there was truly no other way out. Moreover, she really didn’t dare to defy the village chief’s decision. In this village, the chief’s authority was absolute, like that of an emperor of the soil—who would dare to offend him?
She reluctantly got up from the ground, wiped her tears with her sleeve, spat toward Muniang, and then took her son and daughter and left.
The planned feast had become unappetizing. Mrs. Du, knowing that Muniang was upset, helped to dismiss the workers, “I apologize for not making today’s meal enjoyable for everyone, but there’s nothing that can be done about the current situation. Since we’ve lost our appetite, it might be better for everyone to leave. Once Muniang’s issues are settled, I’ll invite you all back for a proper feast.”
The villagers were kind-hearted and naturally wouldn’t fuss about this, saying in unison, “There’s no need, we’ve had our fill of good food and drink already. Thank you so much for the hospitality today, Muniang. We’ll take our leave now.”
Muniang, now completely drained of energy, could only nod in response. Mrs. Du hurriedly escorted the villagers out.
The village chief, seeing Muniang like this, felt a great deal of sympathy. Having married an idiot was already humiliating enough, and now that her family had finally come into some wealth, to have a concubine thrown into the mix—how could anyone not feel disgusted?
“Muniang, I know you’re suffering, and indeed you have been wronged. But with the way things are now, even if we were to bring this to the Local County Official, I fear there wouldn’t be much change to the outcome. Erliang might just be momentarily bewitched…”
But Muniang suddenly looked up, her eyes filled with defiant determination, “Erliang hasn’t touched her! I believe in him! And I absolutely will not yield. The two of us, husband and wife, will not allow a third person to come between us!”
The village chief was a traditional man and not as astute as Muniang. He naturally couldn’t believe that a woman would be so shameless as to throw herself at a man. Muniang didn’t blame him, for the majority of people here probably thought the same way. And that Niu Qingfang, wasn’t she just banking on this very point to dare to play such a bold move?
The village chief sighed, glanced at Erliang, and left, shaking his head helplessly.
Only when everyone in the house had left, did Erliang embrace Muniang, “My Lady, regardless of whether others want me to take her as a wife, I will not marry her. I only want you! Otherwise, let’s elope! We’ll run far away where no one can interfere with us!”
It was a childish remark, yet it carried a firm resolve and was indeed heartwarming to hear.
At this point, Muniang couldn’t muster up the energy to be angry anymore, helplessly curling the corners of her mouth, “How did I ever fall for you, you fool.”
Erliang held Muniang and chuckled, “My Lady, are you praising me?”
“Lady, ahem!” Hong Luo had just entered and found herself amid this scene, coughing awkwardly.
Muniang then pushed Erliang away, “What is it?”
“The Lady has heard all the commotion over here and has been asking me what happened,” Hong Luo explained.
Muniang’s expression darkened, “What did you tell her?”
“Out of fear that the Lady might get upset and fall ill, I lied and said that the villagers assisting us got into a quarrel, and that the Lady was helping to mediate,” Hong Luo said.
Muniang breathed a sigh of relief and took another look at the woman before her. She really hadn’t misjudged her—she wasn’t one to act rashly.
“Well then, I should go and check on Mother. Otherwise, she’ll surely be worried,” Muniang decided.
Hong Luo nodded, “Indeed, it was the old lady who ordered the servant to invite you, Lady.”
Muniang turned to Erliang and said, “Go clean up the mess outside first; it’s rather embarrassing to let Mrs. Du and the others be busy alone.” Then she turned to leave.
But she was stopped by Erliang pulling her back, “What about that matter with Nanny Zhang?”
Muniang gently tugged at the corner of her mouth, “Don’t worry, even if you wanted to take a concubine, I wouldn’t agree.”
With that, she followed Hong Luo out, and Erliang stood there dumbfounded, experiencing for the first time the annoyance of not being smart enough. What did that mean?!
Hong Luo covered her mouth to hide her laugh, “The relationship between the Lady and the master is so good that this talk of concubines is completely groundless.”
Yet Muniang sighed, “It’s not that simple.”
Recalling the recent events, Hong Luo fell silent too. Having lived in a great household for half her life, she was no stranger to the deceit and scheming, but such shamelessness was a first for her. As for devising a plan, she couldn’t think of any good strategies and simply closed her mouth.
Muniang used the same excuses as Hong Luo to soothe Mrs. Lin’s heart, and fortunately, no trouble arose. Mrs. Lin’s illness had just improved slightly these days, and if she were to learn of this incident and became emotional, that would be the end of it.
After finally cleaning up the aftermath of today’s celebratory feast, she looked up and unexpectedly saw Li Qinghe.
Although her hair was done up, her complexion was good. A woman nourished by marriage seems different in bearing, becoming even more beautiful.
“How come you’re here? If your father-in-law finds out, he’ll scold you to death. You’ve just entered the family; it’s not good to offend him,” Muniang said, but in her heart, she was very pleased. After all, Qinghe was the only friend of similar age in the village. She had missed her during these days.
Qinghe angrily retorted, “Are you still concerned about that? Such a big event happened at your home today, the whole village knows. I’m worried about you, so I rushed over immediately.”
Muniang led Qinghe into the house, “Did you hear this from those in the Qiao family? There’s no good word from them, I bet they’re relishing this calamity.”
Once seated on the kang, Qinghe spoke, “Why bother with them? Those gossips, they couldn’t wish harder for your misfortune! I heard this matter isn’t over yet, the village head plans to report it to the Local County Official for handling. What will you do then? Nanny Zhang is infamously difficult, and if you really are forced to accept Niu Qingfang into your home, won’t that be a complete headache?”
Muniang’s expression darkened slightly, “She’s difficult, but I’m not easy to deal with either, and no matter where this goes, I won’t give in the slightest.”
Qinghe replied, “That’s not a solution. With each party claiming they’re in the right, the outcome of the judgment will depend on the County Chief’s mood. If the County Chief really holds Erliang accountable, who will you turn to? Muniang, we can’t take this risk.”
Muniang’s lips were tightly pressed, and after contemplating for a moment, she finally said, “If that’s the case, since Niu Qingfang has played me dirty, I only have to play her at her own game!”
Qinghe’s heart skipped a beat, “What do you mean by that?”
Muniang said sternly, “She likes to throw herself at men, doesn’t she? If everyone catches her and a lover in bed, I want to see if she still has the face to claim she was molested by Erliang! Isn’t that what Nanny Zhang accused me and Erliang of in the beginning? I might as well treat her with her own medicine!”
