?Chapter 82: Chapter 083 Establishing Authority_1 Chapter 82: Chapter 083 Establishing Authority_1 “Where is the overseer?!”
Muniang barked sharply, her petite frame belied the loudness of her voice, causing the nearby laborers to tremble in fright at her fierce demeanor.
The more astute ones immediately ran off to find the overseer.
Soon, a figure staggered over, fawningly and with the utmost respect asked, “Has the Lady arrived?”
Muniang swept a cold gaze over him, noting his bleary, sleepy-eyed appearance—he must have just woken up!
“Housekeeper Wang, have the workers been doing their jobs these past few days? I tasked you to clear all the weeds in the fields and turn over all the soil, and now I find it in this state. What exactly do you take your job for?” Muniang’s tone was already at the edge of annoyance.
Because the laborers bought earlier for planting fruit trees had been diligent and trustworthy, she had let her guard down with them and assumed the laborers acquired from the Wu Family, from Haoli, wouldn’t be too different. It seemed she had been negligent, and if she didn’t set them straight today, they might not take her seriously as their master!
Housekeeper Wang could tell from Muniang’s tone that she was angry, but being an experienced man with a slick tongue, he smiled broadly and said, “How could that be, Lady? The thousand acres of land are vast, and the weeds grow fast—it’s not so easy to clear them instantly. You might not see many workers here, but they’re actually all concentrated over there pulling weeds. How about I call them over for you right now?”
Housekeeper Wang was actually quite shrewd. When he found out his new master was a fifteen-year-old girl, he didn’t take her seriously at all, unafraid, thinking he could just muddle through with a few words.
Muniang hooked her lips slightly, “Oh~ then I must have really misjudged you all. You work so diligently and take your tasks so seriously; it was wrong of me to scold you just now.”
Muniang’s smile only made it feel eerie, something that, of course, probably only Haoli recognized.
On hearing Muniang’s words, Housekeeper Wang felt elated, thinking this young girl indeed was easily fooled, so his smile grew even wider: “The Lady is just impatient, nothing was wrong. We servants must indeed listen to the Lady’s words obediently, mustn’t we?”
Muniang’s expression suddenly darkened, “Get all the workers here, a hundred of them, not one less. If anyone fails to show up, I’ll sell them all to the Human Trafficker!”
Housekeeper Wang was caught off guard, his smile freezing on his face: “Huh?”
“Aren’t you going to get moving and do it? Dawdle any longer and I’ll sell you too!”
Muniang barked loudly, terrifying Housekeeper Wang into a panicked run.
Muniang snorted coldly, thinking they could bully her? Today, she would show them what it meant when a tiger showed its stripes!
In no time, the workers hurried over, internally cursing their luck, having heard on the way that the new master was in a fierce temper. Despite appearing to be a genteel young lady, how could she have such a ferocious side?
Muniang paced around in front of them, her gaze sweeping over each of them before she let out a cold laugh, “You all don’t take my words seriously, do you? The farmland is too vast, and you can’t even finish pulling out a few weeds, right? Unless before you were sold, you were all the pampered Eldest Young Masters of wealthy families, such a trivial task would take you an entire year, wouldn’t it?”
Muniang’s voice grew increasingly louder, causing the hearts of the workers to tremble along.
“Do you think that just because I am young and a woman, you can easily deceive me? With these thousand acres of fertile land, even if you ruined them, you think I wouldn’t have much to say. But I’m laying down the law here today—if you dare to challenge my authority, then I dare to let you know just how grim the consequences can be! I don’t care how your former masters spoiled you, but from today onward, I am your master, and what should be done will be as I say! I have given the order—within two days, all the grass in these fields must be pulled. Even if it means you go without food or sleep to get it done, you will finish the job!”
Muniang’s words were indeed harsh, but she didn’t want to give these laborers any more opportunities to make excuses and delay their work. Two days were sufficient to clear the weeds from the land; although the acreage was vast, so was their number, and after all, there weren’t that many weeds in this fertile field.
The workers were so frightened their legs went weak. Hearing Muniang’s words, they realized they had truly offended the wrong person—this was no easy-to-handle young girl, but a fierce tigress!
Indeed, these workers had their reasons for being slack. Ever since Mr. Wu passed away, Mr. Wu took over all of the family’s affairs. The farmland was only for show—Mr. Wu had never cared about it and was only interested in indulging in pleasures. With no one to supervise them, the workers naturally became lax, and over time things deteriorated to their current state.
“Now! Everyone go and pull the weeds. Before it gets dark, it must be done! Otherwise, if even a single spot’s weeds are not completely cleared, you can do without dinner! And if there are still weeds after dark, you shall forfeit sleep!”
One of the workers mustered the courage to ask meekly, “What about lunch?”
Although it was nearing noon, the workers had not yet had their lunch.
Muniang scoffed, “Are you still thinking about lunch now?”
The worker shrank his neck and shook his head repeatedly, realizing that this was no easy master to provoke!
“Today, I am setting the rules here. If anyone else fails to take my words seriously, I will have them sold at a low price. Whatever your fate may be then, it will no longer be my concern. Don’t come crying and begging to me—I won’t fall for that! Housekeeper Wang!”
“Yes!” Housekeeper Wang quickly stood up, trembling.
Muniang glanced at him coldly, “From today on, you won’t be needed as a housekeeper. You’ll work in the fields just like the other common laborers! Tomorrow, I will personally appoint a new housekeeper. From then on, you’ll all answer to him, so watch your step!”
Upon hearing this, Housekeeper Wang’s face turned pale. He had struggled so hard to earn his position, only to have it stripped away just like that. He had thought about pleading with Muniang, but her firm demeanor left him too scared to speak.
Chastised in this manner, the workers naturally didn’t dare to slack off anymore and quickly got to their work in earnest.
Muniang’s fury only somewhat subsided then. Early spring, which was the best time for sowing, was almost over, and now she had to postpone planting because of their slothful behavior.
Eventually, the workers managed to finish pulling the weeds just before dusk. Looking at the result, Muniang let out a mocking smile, “It turns out you aren’t so feeble after all, quite efficient when you actually put in the effort. It seems that giving you two days to weed was a bit too generous after all.”
