Chapter 64 - 64 063 Striving for Time
?Chapter 64: 063 Striving for Time Chapter 64: 063 Striving for Time It wasn’t long before Chen Shuyun left as well, agreeing to meet at the yoga studio for his lesson on the weekend.
Lin An tidied up his home, cleaned the wooden dinner plate the young boss had brought, and carried a bag of trash downstairs to dispose of it.
By that time, the night had deepened into profound darkness.
The rainy season in Shenhou City had passed without notice, yet the city still seemed to be shrouded in an oppressive atmosphere.
Looking up at the night sky, Lin An let out a deep sigh.
Chen Shuyun was partly right; being a wizard and constantly showing up before the young boss, who knows when I would give myself away.
And not to mention in front of people like Professor Cao and Doctor Zhang, those seasoned members of the Witch Hunter Knights, always walking on thin ice, nervous and cautious.
But…
Where could he go?
Would other city wizards be like Chen Shuyun, feeling the need to compensate him and teach him methods to manage his emotions for free? He’d probably end up as a mere enforcer elsewhere, right?
Would other city’s Witch Hunter Knights be like Professor Cao…
No, he would probably, like every other witch, end up hiding in madness, fearing the day when the Witch Hunter Knights would find him.
Here, at least, he had the young boss to gather information from.
And another thing…
The young boss was slowly building a development team around himself, whether it was the outsourcing department planned for mass repetitive work in the future, or a special project team to groom his own underlings…
If he were to leave now, where would that leave his patron, his discoverer?
Even if he left resolutely, if not other cities, what about the countryside, or even the deep forests and mountains?
Perhaps there too, the Witch Hunter Knights would come scavenging, and outsiders would be too conspicuous, a worse fate awaiting if discovered…
Hmm, would it really be so? Or am I just scaring myself?
Lin An laughed softly, filled with helplessness.
“Life’s moments of triumph should be fully indulged, so don’t let the golden cup face the moon alone; a single bout of drunkenness dispels a thousand worries, hahaha…”
Mimicking Ugly Head’s peculiar tune, Lin An hummed a tuneless song, slightly tipsy, hands in his pockets, glanced at the city lights once more, then turned and walked back to the elevator.
He was a bit drunk.
Time to go back to sleep…
…
That night, Lin An had a nightmare.
He dreamt that he was in a pitch-black space, running out from his own body, anxiously watching as flames raged furiously within it.
The flames were the flames of emotions, fueled by his subconscious, his past experiences, all his past emotions… and the accelerant was the black oil that permeated this dark space, which was the Spiritual Energy of the Spirit Realm.
Then the flames burned through the darkness, and the body, chest blazing with rage, appeared in the real world.
The body began to destroy everything it could see with madness: his house, the company where he worked, slaughtering one familiar face after another.
These faces were so familiar yet so strange, the boss from the usual breakfast spot, the colleagues with whom he had complained about superiors, the regulars on the same subway who had never spoken a word to each other…
The black oil started to flow into the real world through the burned openings, and everyone it touched began to go mad. Overnight, the entire city became a hell on earth.
“No!”
He roared in anger. It shouldn’t be like this, it shouldn’t be like this!
Yet no matter how he struggled, he couldn’t squeeze back into his body, couldn’t wrest back control.
Just then, a giant Furnace appeared in his hands with many gears, steaming, and clicking. The flames inside him were all sucked into the Furnace.
Eventually, the flames were forged into a pair of antlers.
He placed the antlers upon his head and received the power to destroy a city. But he wouldn’t destroy the city now, because he suddenly felt completely empty, not knowing what to do.
He didn’t have any desires; his memories were still there yet felt indifferent, his emotions still existed but seemed superficial.
He was like a living dead who wouldn’t get angry or laugh, didn’t wish to taste good food, didn’t even want to move.
He walked among the crowds of the city, a hollow shell among them.
The only fixation he could remember in his heart was the flame he had forged, knowing that such a terrible thing could cause a disaster for the entire world.
Thus, forging more flames became his sole obsession.
He began to walk through the city dully, aimlessly searching for the flames that might appear.
Only by forging more flames could he feel like he was still alive.
He felt like an antibody created by nature to eradicate germs, an antivirus software produced by the system to fight viruses.
He desperately wanted to be angry, to scream at the top of his lungs—I am a human, dammit!
But he couldn’t, he had already lost the ability to feel anger.
…
…
“Ah~”
Lin An suddenly woke up with a start, sitting up in bed, anxiously feeling himself over, only to realize that at some unknown point, his face had already been streaming with tears and his back was covered in cold sweat.
“Lin An, Lin An!” Ugly Head jumped in front of him, babbling loudly, “It’s so magical, I had a dream even though I wasn’t in a net, I dreamed of…”
“Huh?” The head shook the blood from its hair, puzzled, facing Lin An, “What did I dream about?”
Lin An was silent for a moment, then patted the head with a smile, “Maybe it was a nice dream, the last two times you dreamed of beautiful women, didn’t you? A juicy peach, long-legged beauties.”
“Really?” The head stuck out its black tongue, “Oh, they were certainly beautiful and tempting, but poisonous, all monsters, all monsters!”
As it spoke, it tumbled about the room, chattering endearingly.
Lin An watched it, arching an eyebrow.
So…
Is this head’s ability prophecy? A prophet? And it seemed he had borrowed its power and had a dream? Or was it that what one ponders by day will peep through one’s dreams by night?
Unclear, he was too lazy to think about it now.
After taking a shower and changing his clothes, he sat blankly on a lounge chair on the balcony, watching over the city.
For some reason, after having that dream, he felt much more at ease.
Witches were frightening, but at least for now, he had made arrangements with Chen Shuyun for her to teach him how to manage his emotions.
Witch Hunter Knights were also frightening, but at least if Professor Cao’s method from the Animal Husbandry Faction was to use him to extend his waning life or something, he wouldn’t act until he had managed to smelt the Lu Jiao with the Furnace.
The world is full of changes; who knows what will happen by that time?
Lin An still had plenty of time, his only concern was not to let the Witches find out he had become a Witch Hunter Knight, nor to let the Witch Hunter Knights discover he was actually a Wizard.
To fight for time to grow.
In this time, he must learn from Chen Shuyun the ways to manage emotions and all sorts of powerful witchcraft; he must learn from Professor Cao the Breathing Skill, the Furnace, and the methods of smelting Lu Jiao.
More importantly, he hoped that in this time, he could help the little boss develop the game.
It was both to repay the little boss for her kindness and to realize the value of his own life.
And then…
Flee for his life!
To leave this city far behind!
Lin An has always been clear about what he wants.
After making a commotion in the room, the head ran over to the balcony and jumped onto the table beside him. Lin An turned to look at it, smiling faintly.
“I feel like I’m floating in a vast ocean, clinging to a log, with two different currents trying to pull me into their respective whirlpools, but I’m not so desperate, do you know why?”
Head looked puzzled, shaking itself, “Don’t understand.”
“Because…” Lin An turned to look at the sunlight peeking through the gaps between the city’s skyscrapers, “I’m holding onto a log!”
That log, it is spirit indeed.
This is what sets him completely apart from both Witches and Witch Hunter Knights.
He always believed that there is no dead end in life, there must be a way out, and that way, is spirit!
Lin An patted his behind and got up, stretching lazily, “Time for work, time for work!”
After hanging the head in the newly bought net, Lin An stepped out the door with a spring in his step.
Taking the subway was quite convenient, but today, Lin An didn’t plan to continue his usual routine; turning on his heel, he headed towards the bus stop.
Luckily, just as he arrived, the bus stopped right in front of him.
Taking a seat at the very back, he gently rested his head against the window, quietly watching the fleeting streets and pedestrians outside.
In the seat in front, a child took advantage of his mother’s nap to turn around, leaning on the backrest, curiously gazing at him.
Their gazes met—a giant eyeball with a green epidermis covered in vines that didn’t droop but reached for the sky full of life.
Ha~
Do you also have a big eye?
Lin An smiled faintly, whispering softly, “That’s right, darling, aren’t we all so curious about this world?”
