?Chapter 19: Chapter 19 Yan Bao Falls Ill Chapter 19: Chapter 19 Yan Bao Falls Ill “Mm.” The little girl, sick and listless, responded, blowing her nose as she spoke, “I want to see big brother, but I have a serious cold, and I’m afraid of infecting him.”
Perhaps due to the illness, she seemed somewhat dispirited, and her voice sounded soft and weak as she spoke.
It was like she was acting coquettishly.
“…”
Sheng Xian’s Adam’s apple bobbed slightly.
He was not the type to meddle in other people’s affairs and was a man of few words, speaking only as much as necessary.
Normally, if he felt there was nothing more to say on a call, he would hang up right away.
But now, he didn’t know what to say, nor did he end the call.
After a standoff, it was Lu Jingyan on the other end who broke the silence between them, “Big brother, I want to sleep for a while, I’ll hang up if there’s nothing else.”
Sheng Xian uttered a soft “Mm,” paused for a few seconds, then took the phone away from his ear and pressed to turn off the screen.
…
In the afternoon, Lu Jingyan, wrapped up in a blanket in her office, took a nap and felt much better when she woke up, her fever had subsided, and aside from a very stuffy nose, she was feeling much improved compared to the morning.
Sitting up at her desk, she saw over a hundred unread messages on WeChat.
Most were from the group chat with her, Song Xian, and Chen Kai.
Skimming through the messages as quickly as she could with the click of her mouse, Lu Jingyan belatedly realized today was Chen Kai’s birthday.
Chen Kai was quite flamboyant, even more ceremony-oriented than women, putting significant emphasis on traditional holidays and, most importantly, his birthday parties.
He had started preparing for his birthday two months in advance.
Perhaps because Lu Jingyan had been absent from the group all day, Chen Kai, fearing she had forgotten about tonight’s party, kept calling out for her in the group chat.
Luckily, Lu Jingyan, having prepared his birthday gift way in advance, already had it ready in her office. She replied to Chen Kai’s barrage of messages asking when she would arrive with a “Heading out now,” touched up her makeup in the restroom, and then set off with the gift in hand.
When Lu Jingyan arrived at the birthday party, it was still early, and aside from Song Xian, only Chen Kai and a few buddies with whom he regularly hung out were present.
Much like a woman, Chen Kai had adorned the place with flowers and balloons, opting for a blend of light blue and white decor.
Chen Kai’s family was wealthy, and he spared no expense, comparable to Lu Jingyan’s lavish spending—he had ordered specialty liquors from abroad; food was flown in, and even his cake was custom-designed.
Most outrageously, the esteemed Mr. Chen had ordered a new car for himself as a birthday present six months earlier, had it delivered to the dealership last month but refused to pick it up until his birthday. He wanted the dealership to deliver the car in a transparent glass carrier with a banner that read “Happy 27th Birthday, Chen Kai” to the venue, alongside music and twinkling pink lights.
From the dealership to his party, the journey spanned half the city, a high-profile affair that almost seemed aimed at letting the whole city know it was his birthday.
Today being Friday, and with no work the next day, Chen Kai apparently intended to party to the fullest. He didn’t invite any elders to his birthday bash, it was exclusive to his friends from all walks of life.
Chen Kai dabbled in investments, and thus had a very extensive network, from the entertainment industry to esports, and even the online literature scene.
This resulted in a diverse crowd tonight, ranging from obscure eighteenth-tier stars to esports champions who had trended on social media, and a few internet celebrities.
Lu Jingyan, considered a close and longstanding friend of Chen Kai due to their family connections since childhood, recognized less than a third of the attendees, despite her seniority.
When the crowd grew, Lu Jingyan’s demeanor turned cold, hardly acknowledging people she didn’t know and even some she did know, responding to their greetings with disinterest.
It was clear Chen Kai intended for no one to leave sober tonight; throughout the party venue, not a single water bottle could be found by Lu Jingyan.
All that was available was a variety of alcohol, from high to low proof, whiskey to cocktails.
It could really be said to have everything.
Lu Jingyan, a frequent bar hopper, still drank quite a bit today, even though she was sick.
Whether it was the alcohol or her cold getting worse, her head started to ache severely in the latter half of the night.
Chen Kai, fluttering around like a butterfly, came by Lu Jingyan’s side and, seeing her slouching on the couch hugging a pillow, hissed, “Darling, what’s wrong with you?”
Lu Jingyan lifted her eyelids to glance at him, not really wanting to talk: “It’s nothing.”
“Why does your voice sound so muffled? Did you catch a cold?” Chen Kai reached out and touched her forehead: “You’re a bit feverish.”
“You’re sick and didn’t even mention it,” Chen Kai set his drink on the table and tugged at her arm, trying to pull her up. “Come on, come on, I’ll take you to the hospital.”
Lu Jingyan pulled away: “No need, it’s just a minor cold, not a big deal.”
“Then I’ll get you some medicine,” Chen Kai took out his phone.
Just then, Chen Kai’s phone rang, and he answered, “Eh? Cousin.”
Lu Jingyan, her eyelids drooping wearily, turned to look at Chen Kai.
The place was noisy, so she couldn’t hear what Sheng Xian on the other end was saying.
But it must have been brief, for after a few seconds, Chen Kai spoke again, “You want to come over? I’ll send you the address on your phone.”
He took out his phone, tapped a few times, then held it up: “Did you get that?”
It seemed Sheng Xian was about to hang up when Chen Kai suddenly called out, “Wait a sec, bro.”
“Are you on your way? Could you pick up some medicine? Cold medicine, Yan Bao is sick.”
Whatever Sheng Xian said on the phone made Chen Kai exclaim, “Ah, never mind then, I’ll just order delivery.”
After ending the call, Chen Kai focused on his phone and placed the order.
