After leaving Zhuang Chen’s place, Sheng Xian went to the supermarket.
His supermarket visits were always purposeful, and he consistently purchased the same few items, so he quickly pushed his cart towards the checkout line.
Across from the supermarket, there was a row of small shops, one of which sold plants. The shop was decorated like a dream, and out front, there was a row of bonsais, including a few water bonsais with small fish inside that he couldn’t identify.
“Hello.”
The cashier’s sudden voice interrupted Sheng Xian’s train of thought.
He expressionlessly pulled his gaze back and started placing items from his cart onto the checkout counter one by one.
After paying, Sheng Xian, with bags in hand, walked toward the elevator. After a few steps, he turned back.
Ten minutes later,
Sheng Xian looked at the water bonsai on the passenger seat, securely wrapped by the shopkeeper, and raised his hand to rub his brow forcefully.
What was he thinking?
He had actually bought this thing on a sudden whim.
The supermarket was near the residential complex where Sheng Xian lived, a mere five-minute drive. The complex’s duty guard recognized Sheng Xian’s car and, while sitting in the security room, opened the gate for him, cheerily calling out, “Mr. Sheng.”
As usual, Sheng Xian nodded slightly and was about to drive into the underground parking when suddenly, as if he had thought of something, he hit the brakes, rolled down the window, and handed the water bonsai to the guard.
Once home, Sheng Xian put the perishables from the supermarket in the fridge while the rest of the household items stayed unopened in the bags, tossed aside carelessly.
Coming out of the kitchen, he glanced at the water bonsai carelessly placed on the dining table and rubbed his temples with a hint of a headache.
He stood for a moment, then went over and tore off the protective cling film wrapped by the shopkeeper.
The tiny fish inside—small like tadpoles—swam cheerfully, and the swaying aquatic plants created ripples in the water.
Sheng Xian remembered how he had handed over the water bonsai to the security guard, only to stop his car five minutes later, walk back to the guard room, knock on the door, and, facing a warmly enthusiastic Mr. Sheng, expressionlessly extend his hand to take back the water bonsai. The memory made his headache even worse.
Sheng Xian let out a long sigh, carrying the water bonsai around the room for a while before finally placing it in his study where he could see it just by lifting his head.
Back in the master bedroom, Sheng Xian took a shower. Afterward, he grabbed a book and leaned against the headboard to read, as he usually did.
As he read, he suddenly felt that something was a bit off.
After a few seconds, he slowly shifted his gaze to the bedding.
She had slept in this set of bed linens last night…
“…”
For a moment, Sheng Xian was stunned, trying to grasp the thoughts actively swirling in his mind.
“…”
A few seconds later, like he’d contracted some virus from the bed, he quickly turned and got up, fetching a clean set of bed sheets and a duvet cover to change.
It was over.
Sheng Xian, you’re finished.
A woman had just slept in your bed—something quite ordinary—yet your thoughts drifted to such crooked places.
Sheng Xian closed his eyes to calm himself, then took the bed linens and duvet cover he had removed to the balcony and stuffed them into the washing machine.
Unable to continue reading, Sheng Xian simply picked up the bags he had left in the corner and started organizing the various things inside.
Just then, his phone, which he had placed to one side, buzzed twice.
Lu Jingyan: “Brother, brother.”
Lu Jingyan: “Are you done with your stuff, brother?”
While typing on his phone with one hand, Sheng Xian continued to take things out of the bag with the other.
Sheng Xian: “Hmm.”
Lu Jingyan: “Brother, don’t you take a break on weekends? What have you been busy with?”
Sheng Xian: “Met with a friend, went to the supermarket.”
Lu Jingyan: “Supermarket?”
Despite the screen between them, Sheng Xian couldn’t tell if it was an illusion, but he felt the excitement of a schoolkid.
Though he had no idea why the mention of a supermarket would excite her.
Before he could reply to her message, a new one popped up on the screen.
Lu Jingyan: “Brother, what did you go buy at the supermarket?”
Lu Jingyan: “Did you get me slippers?”
Sheng Xian: “…”
He really didn’t know where her confidence came from, thinking he would remember those offhand remarks she made.
Lu Jingyan: “Is it pink?”
Lu Jingyan: “Is it size 36?”
Sheng Xian, expressionless, tapped the keyboard a few times: “Didn’t buy.”
Then he put down the phone and pulled out the last item from the bag.
It was a pair of fluffy pink slippers with rabbit ears, size 36.
The schoolkid sounded disappointed in the voice message she sent, her voice muffled: “Oh.”
Without responding to her message, Sheng Xian stared coldly at the slippers for a while, tore off the plastic wrapping, and placed them in the shoe cabinet outside the door.
Returning home and closing the door, Sheng Xian picked up the phone again and saw two more messages.
Lu Jingyan: “Brother, are you tired?”
Lu Jingyan: “If you’re not sleepy, can I make a voice call with you?”
Before Sheng Xian could decide how to respond, her call came through.
Sheng Xian: “…”
Was this a request for his opinion?
More like a notification.
Sheng Xian looked at the screen silently for a moment and then pressed answer.
He hadn’t paid much attention, but when the call connected and he saw her face pop up on the screen, he realized she had made a video call.
She must have just taken a shower; her face was clean and white, without a hint of makeup.
She must really like pink a lot; even the hairband on her head was pink, to match her pink pajamas.
As soon as she saw his face on the video, she immediately smiled: “Brother, do you know what I did after I got home? I looked up some news and found out that homosexuals are very likely to get AIDS.”
Sheng Xian: “…”
The schoolkid in the video was as earnest as a news reporter: “Not just a high likelihood of getting AIDS, but also a higher chance of contracting other illnesses. And do you know, many homosexuals in real life are very promiscuous.”
“…”
“Also, some deceive innocent women into becoming ‘beards’. Today I read a news story about a beard who couldn’t stand her husband’s emotional abuse and neglect of the family. In a fit of rage, she dismembered him.”
“…”
“Cut into many pieces and froze them in their home’s freezer, carrying a bit each time to feed to stray dogs.”
Lu Jingyan thought, if I can’t straighten you out soon, I might as well scare you to death.
She was ready with several similar news stories, intending to continue frightening Sheng Xian.
But before she could open her mouth, Sheng Xian in the video suddenly lifted his eyelids: “What was the last thing you said to me at noon?”
“Huh?” Lu Jingyan was caught off-guard and thought for two seconds: “I will straighten you out eventually.”
“No need to straighten,” Sheng Xian’s tone was as faint as the morning fog on a summer’s day: “I’m straight.”
PS: Good night~ [The personality type of homo-romantic heterosexual is a real phenomenon.][The comments about homosexuality in this chapter are absolutely not meant to discriminate against homosexuals, but it is indeed true that gay men are at a higher risk of contracting AIDS.]
