Chapter 69 - 69 69 Your Cousin is Right
?Chapter 69: Chapter 69: Your Cousin is Right Chapter 69: Chapter 69: Your Cousin is Right Lu Jingyan was silent for a while, then gave a soft “Hmm” and handed her empty glass to Chen Kai.
Chen Kai hurriedly grabbed the bottle from the table and filled her glass.
Lu Jingyan clinked glasses with Chen Kai and tilted her head back to gulp down a big sip of alcohol.
The spicy liquid slid down her throat bit by bit, but halfway through swallowing, it felt as if an invisible hand was choking her; the alcohol got stuck in her throat and she couldn’t swallow any further.
She suddenly felt very sad.
Over the years, she had always been alone and well understood the loneliness of being left behind by the world to the extent that she regarded it as normal and had forgotten what sadness felt like.
But at this moment, she was truly sad, a strong sourness spreading from the bottom of her heart to her eyes and nose.
She lowered her eyelids and quietly stared at the glass in her hand, trying to seem as if nothing was wrong.
After a long while, she regained her composure, turned to look at Chen Kai, who was chatting with someone nearby, and gently tapped his shoulder.
Chen Kai turned his head quickly: “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
Lu Jingyan looked at him expressionlessly, “I’ve noticed you’re quite good at burning your bridges.”
Chen Kai: “?”
Ignoring her confusion, Lu Jingyan slowly took a few sips of her drink, glanced at him, and said, “Your cousin, he’s been quite nice to you. The last time you brought your online friend to seek legal help, he assisted without a second thought. Yet on New Year’s Eve, there you were partying hard, not even inviting your cousin for a drink.”
Chen Kai: “…”
Watching as Chen Kai’s confused expression became one of utter disbelief, Lu Jingyan said nonchalantly, “Chen Kai, you really disappoint me. It’s bad enough you burn bridges, but you lack even a bit of tact.”
Chen Kai took a deep breath: “Lu Jingyan, clarify your words for me, how am I lacking insight?”
“Do you have any?” Lu Jingyan glanced at Chen Kai, “I gave you such a clear hint, yet you haven’t invited anyone for a drink even now.”
“…” Chen Kai was clearly annoyed, “Lu Xiaoyan, I did invite him; my cousin finds it boring here and didn’t come.”
Lu Jingyan hummed, surprisingly calm: “Your cousin is right.”
“…”
“It is pretty boring.”
“…”
“So I’ve decided to leave.”
“…”
…
After leaving the KTV, Lu Jingyan stood by the roadside to catch some cold wind. She hadn’t drunk much, so the wind cleared all traces of alcohol from her.
She often hung out in this area with Chen Kai at night and knew the place well. She tugged at her collar and walked about a hundred meters along the road, then turned right into a dimly lit alley and stopped in front of an izakaya with lanterns hanging at the door.
The izakaya owner was quite capricious, only serving a few tables each evening until the ingredients ran out.
Lu Jingyan was familiar with the owner of the izakaya. When she pushed the door open, it was very quiet inside, with only the owner there, experimenting with a new dish.
The owner looked up at the sound: “Alone?”
“Yeah,” Lu Jingyan found a seat and sat down: “Closed?”
“Closed, but there’s a new dish if you’d like to try?”
Lu Jingyan shook her head.
The owner poured her a warm glass of water and took a seat opposite her.
Lu Jingyan took out her phone, unlocked the screen, and scrolled to Sheng Xian’s number; then she pushed the phone across to the owner, “Do me a favor.”
The owner played along quickly after hearing her request.
Sheng Xian picked up fast and before he could speak, the owner began, “Hello, is this Mr. Sheng?”
“Do you know the owner of this phone?”
“She’s drunk a lot in my shop, practically unconscious now. You are her emergency contact, so could you please come and take her home?”
After a moment of silence from Sheng Xian, “Address.”
The owner gave the address,
As soon as he finished speaking, Sheng Xian hung up with a click.
…
Sheng Xian arrived quickly, in less than ten minutes, and the door to the izakaya creaked open.
The room was a bit noisy under the dim lighting.
Sheng Xian furrowed his brow and looked in the direction of the sound.
He saw someone, quite drunk and barely conscious, playing dice with a middle-aged man in a white apron.
There were only two people in the store, yet they played with the energy of twenty.
Sheng Xian: “…”
Sheng Xian silently stared at the two for quite a while.
The two, completely engrossed in their game, didn’t even notice there was an extra person in the store.
Sheng Xian cleared his throat.
The two ignored him, with the barely conscious person acting like a wild little girl, standing on a chair shaking the dice.
Sheng Xian sighed and walked over.
With a slap, the dice were trapped under a teacup, and Lu Jingyan said, “2 fours.”
Owner: “3 fours.”
Sheng Xian: “8 fours.”
Lu Jingyan: “There are only damn six dice, how could there be 8 fours?”
Sheng Xian: “…”
Owner: “…”
Lu Jingyan: “…”
The izakaya went quiet for three seconds. Lu Jingyan cleared his throat, took his foot off the chair and sat down, slowly lifted his head, reached out to touch his hair, and with a smile propped his chin, called out to Sheng Xian with a grin, “Big brother, you’re here.”
Sheng Xian looked down at Lu Jingyan without saying a word.
The perceptive owner quietly gathered up the dice and teacup and left.
Lu Jingyan tapped the phone on the table, the screen lit up, and she checked the time: “Big brother, you got here pretty fast, in ten minutes.”
Speaking, Lu Jingyan leaned her head forward, right up to Sheng Xian’s midsection, looking up into his drooping eyes: “Big brother, were you really worried about me just now?”
Sheng Xian closed his eyes for a moment, took a step back, and created some distance: “Are we leaving?”
Lu Jingyan: “Ah? Not staying a bit longer?”
Sheng Xian didn’t respond.
Lu Jingyan scooted further in, patted the space she made available: “Big brother, are you hungry? Want a bowl of ramen?”
Sheng Xian didn’t sit down.
Lu Jingyan rubbed her stomach, looking rather pitiful: “But I’m hungry, I want to eat ramen.”
The owner, who was at the cashier counting money, lifted his head: “We’re closed.”
“…”
Lu Jingyan looked up and glared at the overly talkative owner.
Once she finished glaring at the owner, Sheng Xian tapped the table, looking quite impatient: “Let’s go.”
Lu Jingyan stood up, waved goodbye to the owner, and then followed Sheng Xian out of the izakaya.
The alley was very quiet, just the two of them.
As they quietly walked a few steps forward, Lu Jingyan said: “Big brother, aren’t you going to ask why I tricked you into coming here?”
Sheng Xian acted as if he hadn’t heard, giving no response.
Lu Jingyan stopped walking and refused to move.
Sheng Xian waited where he was for a while, seeing she was stubborn to the end, and went back to her: “Why.”
“Because,” Lu Jingyan paused for two seconds, lifted her head, smiling at Sheng Xian: “I wanted to spend New Year’s Eve with big brother.”
