Jing Haohao seemed deep in thought, her expression slightly gloomy. After a while, she lifted her head and looked at Liang Chen. He quickly lowered his head and said something to her. She shook her head, her gaze on Chen unwavering. A second later, Liang Chen raised his hand, tenderly patting her hair. The gesture looked affectionate, and she showed no sign of pulling away. Instead, she gave him a soft nod, her eyes radiating warmth.
When did the curiously warm woman who used to shyly stay by his side begin to take on a submissive posture in the company of another man?
The sight was a piercing one, yet Shen Liangnian couldn’t tear his eyes away. He watched as Jing Haohao and Liang Chen got into the car one after the other, their assistant drove the car away, and his gaze lingered. He seemed to see their past, their poorest days together, when he didn’t have a car, and they had to walk long distances to catch a bus. Back then, dining at Pizza Hut was their most extravagant indulgence. She would carefully pack any leftover food to take home. During the severe winters, while standing at the bus stop, she would snuggle into his arms. Suddenly, she would look up at him and when he noticed, she would unreservedly smile at him and say, “Liangnian, you look so handsome.”
His heart ached even more than before.
Shen Liangnian raised his hand to his left chest, feeling an emptiness as if he’d lost something indispensable.
He felt as though he had lost all strength, leaning listlessly against the back of the car, motionless.
After what felt like an eternity, his phone suddenly rang. He answered.
“Hello, is this Mr. Shen? Are you Qiao Wennuan’s boyfriend?”
Shen Liangnian frowned, on the verge of refusal when a nurse from the hospital continued, “Mr. Shen, your girlfriend has had a miscarriage. If it’s convenient for you, please come to the hospital right now.”
Miscarriage?
Shen Liangnian’s phone slipped from his palm and landed on his lap.
“Hello, hello? Mr. Shen, are you still there?”
Suddenly coming to his senses, Shen Liangnian lifted his phone: “What exactly happened?”
“Miss Qiao has been pregnant for over two months, but it wasn’t stable. She had a car accident this afternoon, and with all the emotional stress, she’s lost the baby” the nurse explained simply, then continued, “Mr. Shen, you are the father of the child, aren’t you? Ms. Qiao needs to have surgery now; we need you to come to the hospital as soon as possible to sign consent for her surgery. Otherwise, it may be too late and Ms. Qiao’s life could be in danger.”
…
By ten o’clock at night, Qiao Wennuan woke once again from the hospital bed.
The room was quiet. As she opened her eyes and her senses returned, she heard a low voice by her ear, “Miss Qiao, you’re awake?”
Qiao Wennuan subconsciously looked around the room, with an instinctive struggle, she tried to sit up.
“Miss Qiao, you’ve just had an abortion, you should not move around. You need to stay in bed and rest.”
“An abortion?” Qiao Wennuan’s face changed in an instant, murmuring her question while looking at the nurse.
“Miss Qiao. Please be strong. You are still young, you can conceive again.”
