?Chapter 438: Chapter 439: Cold War (1)_1 Chapter 438: Chapter 439: Cold War (1)_1 Jing Haohao didn’t speak, simply tracing her lips into a small smile. It was a self-mocking smile, as though she were also mocking him.

A tinge of pain prickled in Liang Chen’s heart.

He knew that she must resent him even more now. But he merely wanted her to stay, not caring who she loved. As long as he loved her, that was enough.

Liang Chen closed his eyes, not saying a word. After a long while, he finally opened his eyes and said, “Haohao, let’s go back to Jiangshan City.”

Jing Haohao didn’t respond.

Liang Chen didn’t press her. He just fixed his gaze on Jing Haohao.

After a long silence, Jing Haohao chuckled without humor. She raised her head, revealing her clear and striking countenance. Her eyes were achingly bright, a soft dimple appearing on her cheek when she smiled. She was stunningly beautiful.

Yet, despite her beauty, the words that came out of her mouth were particularly titillating and hurtful.

“Do I have the right to decide if I go back to Jiangshan City?” she retorted.

He understood the undertone of her question. Never before had someone mocked him so subtly. Yet now, Liang Chen just pursed his lips, silently watching the fading light in Jing Haohao’s eyes. After a moment, he nodded and said, “I booked a flight at five this afternoon. We should leave soon if we don’t want to be late.”

Everything Jing Haohao had in the small town was of no use back in Jiangshan City.

She had signed a year lease with her landlord, trying to get her money back would be practically impossible. She thought of Jin, who was sharing a place with someone else, and decided to give him her house key. Their sizes were similar, so she left all her clothes for Jin. She only brought with her the bag she packed when she left Jiangshan City, which contained the money from selling her house and some personal documents.

Liang Chen sat in the car silently, calmly watching the two young girls saying their teary goodbyes.

Jin stood outside the car with tears in his eyes, waving at Jing Haohao. Jing Haohao’s eyes were also red as she raised her hand to wipe away a tear as the car began to move.

Through the rearview mirror, Liang Chen saw Jing Haohao’s red, teary eyes. He pulled out a tissue and handed it to her. “Wipe your tears,” he told her.

Jing Haohao didn’t even glance at the tissue in front of her. She turned her head away, giving Liang Chen the back of her head. Closing her eyes, she appeared not to want to see him at all.

Liang Chen’s hand clenched the tissue as he fixed his gaze on Jing Haohao, his eyes darkening. A moment later, he withdrew his hand holding the tissue, slowly turned his head, and returned his attention to driving along the road.

The car sped along the winding road.

There was no conversation between Jing Haohao and Liang Chen during the entire journey.

The atmosphere in the car was stagnant and silent.

After a while, Jing Haohao began to doze off.

The journey from the small town to the airport was roughly three hours. Realizing that they hadn’t eaten anything that afternoon, Liang Chen stopped the car at a rest station.

Jing Haohao woke up, rubbed her eyes, and was about to ask where they were when she saw Liang Chen. Closing her mouth, she glanced outside the car and realized they were at a rest station. She then settled back into her comfortable spot in the car.
