?Chapter 442: Chapter 443: Cold War (5)_1 Chapter 442: Chapter 443: Cold War (5)_1 Soon after, she felt a slight chill and a slight pain radiating from her palm.

Jing Haohao slightly opened her eyes, seeing Liang Chen squatting by the bed, a first-aid box by his hand. He held a cotton swab, dipped in alcohol, delicately cleaning the wound on her hand.

The injury happened yesterday, she had accidentally shattered a makeup bottle upon learning that she was the woman at the center of a scandal. She’d cut herself while picking up the pieces.

The wound was not deep and had stopped bleeding last night. It didn’t ache at all today unless touched.

The wound was on her palm, usually unnoticed by others.

She wasn’t sure how he had noticed, but his actions were gentle, as if he were handling a precious jewel.

As Jing Haohao watched Liang Chen focused on her wound, a wave of inner struggle welled up within her.

It wasn’t until Liang Chen stood up to leave that she hastily closed her eyes, pretending to be fast asleep.

However, all her sleepiness was gone, and her mind was filled with a hodgepodge of thoughts and images which kept her unable to sleep for a long time.

The first night passed with Jing Haohao pretending to be asleep, without any conversation between them.

The second night, Liang Chen came home late due to taking over many duties at the company, having spent the previous day picking up Jing Haohao.

Jing Haohao had already had dinner and was watching TV in the upstairs bedroom.

Nanny Lin meticulously recounted Jing Haohao’s activities throughout the day to Liang Chen. Being a keen listener, he went upstairs after the conversation.

Before he could reach the door, Liang Chen heard the abrupt silencing of the TV. Through the gap in the door, he saw Jing Haohao scampering into bed and pulling the covers over herself.

He stood at the door for a while, knowing that she was pretending to sleep to avoid facing him, then entered the room.

Jing Haohao perked her ears to listen, hearing Liang Chen take off his coat and stand by the bed.

She intuitively felt Liang Chen’s gaze fixated on her face, scrutinizing every detail.

Her heartbeat quickened with each passing second, and just when she thought she couldn’t pretend any longer, she heard a faint sigh reverberating near her ear, followed by footsteps, growing fainter until they disappeared at the bedroom door.

Only then did Jing Haohao gently open her eyes, staring at the empty room and Liang Chen’s coat on the couch, she swallowed and stared blankly at the ceiling for a while.

That night, Liang Chen returned very late to the room, and Jing Haohao had already fallen asleep. She looked peaceful, no coldness, no neglect, no deliberate pretense.

Liang Chen looked at her face for a long while, then lowered his head and gently kissed her cheek. After a lingering moment, he reluctantly left her side, carefully lifting her to hold her in his arms.

The next day, when Jing Haohao woke up, Liang Chen was already gone. As she got up, she accidentally touched something and turned to look – a gift box.

When Jing Haohao opened it, she found a delicate bracelet studded with small, multi-colored diamonds, bright and exquisite.

Without a second thought, Jing Haohao knew it was from Liang Chen.

Was this another way of apologizing to her?

Jing Haohao stared at the bracelet for a good thirty seconds before casually closing the box as if she never noticed it. She placed it on the bedside table and went to the bathroom to freshen up.
