?Chapter 463: Chapter 464 Happy Birthday (5)_1 Chapter 463: Chapter 464 Happy Birthday (5)_1 He doesn’t think himself self-pitying. He did everything he could to please her. Yet, his efforts, like strikes upon a hard stone, garnered no response.

He always felt he was invincible, immune to all hurt. But now, he discovered that, in life, there would always be an unexpected blow you never see coming.

This unexpected hit may not cause any physical injury, yet it can effortlessly penetrate the softest and most vulnerable part of your heart, inflicting the deadliest pain.

Under the dim light, her clear eyes were veiled by a hazy glow, making it impenetrable for him to discern her emotions.

From her, he could vaguely detect a sense of indifference.

This indifference made him sense a distance from her, as if she were far away even when right before his eyes.

After a short pause without speaking from Liang Chen, Jing Haohao then spoke up: “I really appreciate what you did this evening, but, this appreciation doesn’t imply that anything could change between us. I remember vividly all the things you’ve done, every bit and piece.”

As she spoke, Jing Haohao opened her palm towards Liang Chen, pointing at the various scars on her hands. She said, “These are not significant wounds. Some were left when I was little, some recently. Yet, as you see, some scars will vanish completely after a short while, leaving no trace. But some take years, even a decade, to fade and vanish. And there are some scars…”
She lifted her gaze to look into Liang Chen’s eyes, and said, “that will never disappear in this lifetime.”

She spoke slowly, word by word. Although it seemed she was speaking to the man before her, she knew too well that these words were more for herself to hear.

Her words pierced Liang Chen’s chest like a pointed dagger. His body instantly froze over in a chilling sensation.

He understood what she was trying to get across: she equated life’s hurts to scars. So, the hurt he has caused her….was it the lifelong, unforgivable kind in her heart?

Liang Chen could only feel a weight in his throat, making breathing difficult.

Jing Haohao gently lowered her hand, cast a glance at him, then lifted her hand to close the room door.

Just as the door was about to completely shut, Liang Chen’s voice abruptly emerged, “Haohao.”

Jing Haohao’s movements faltered for a split second.

The man outside, through half-closed doors, stared at Jing Haohao’s figure that drooped towards the ground, hesitated, then began, “I went on a business trip to Shanghai. Originally, it was for five days, but I shortened it to four. I practically got no sleep last night and caught the early morning flight back.”

As Liang Chen said this, he paused as if uncertain whether to proceed or not. After a lengthy silence, he finally went on.

A hint of desolation lingered in his voice.

“Today’s my birthday, Haohao. I wanted to invite you to join me for dinner, to share this day with me.”

Jing Haohao slowly lifted her head, gazing at the closed door before her. Her eyes glazed over.

“Well, it doesn’t matter, I still made it back in time for dinner. Even though all the dishes served were not my favorites, the first birthday meal shared with you… Mmm, it tasted marvelous.”
