?53: Chapter 53 Lan Li_1 53: Chapter 53 Lan Li_1 “He Zhilan, we’ve just started the new school term, and yet here you are reading all-English classic works, how much of it can you even comprehend?” Tan Heqian looked a bit surprised as he watched He Zhilan take a renowned English work off the shelf.
“Don’t tell me you understand everything.”
He Zhilan had taken the book from the shelf at random.
It was only when Tan Heqian commented that she looked back at the cover, coincidently, it was the same book she had been reading over the past couple of days.
He Zhilan lowered her voice, pointing at the person seated nearby engrossed in reading a book, she said, “Tan Heqian, don’t you think, as men, you should be as quiet as they are?
Come on, find a book, and read it seriously!
Stop fooling around!”
As the words fell, He Zhilan quickly found a vacant seat and sat down.
After a while, Tan Heqian, with a book, followed to sit next to her.
The book in Tan Heqian’s hand, however, was not related to any academic subject.
He Zhilan read her book with utmost concentration, unlike Tan Heqian, who after reading for a while, couldn’t focus and shifted his gaze to He Zhilan instead.
In fact, Tan Heqian was aware that something was bothering He Zhilan.
Since the afternoon, she had not been able to concentrate fully, even while talking to him, her mind would frequently wander.
Although they were desk-mates and got along well, without He Zhilan voicing her worries, Tan Heqian felt too embarrassed to pry.
However, Tan Heqian couldn’t help but speculate, could it be about her family?
He Zhilan was married.
What could possibly disturb her if not her family’s issues?
Tan Heqian delved further into his guesswork, was He Zhilan missing her husband?
Upon this conjecture, Tan Heqian could no longer hold back, he stood up, borrowed a pen and paper from a fellow student at the adjacent desk, quickly scrawled a sentence, and handed it to He Zhilan, covering the book she was reading.
“What is it?” He Zhilan asked in a low voice, then she lowered her eyes to read the note that Tan Heqian had given her.
On reading it, her face turned slightly red with embarrassment.
Tan Heqian’s note asked whether she was missing her husband.
Worrying is indeed a form of missing, and this was a fact.
He Zhilan gestured to Tan Heqian, suggesting they go out and talk.
They both returned their books and left the library, aimlessly strolling down the path.
He Zhilan sighed, then turned to look at Tan Heqian, asking, “Do you think you guys sometimes just casually brush people off when you are talking?”
“What do you mean by ‘you guys’?
Are you going to assume all men are the same?” Tan Heqian looked aggrieved, “What did I do to upset you?”
The expression on Tan Heqian’s face was too funny; He Zhilan shook her head and giggled, “Okay, my bad!
I have been constantly worried about him.”
“‘Him’?
Your husband?” Tan Heqian asked.
Nodding her head, He Zhilan admitted.
“Who else could it be?
After dropping me at the school, he returned to his base.
He said he would call me as soon as he got back to the base, but he failed to keep his word!
I waited all night, but the dormitory phone never rang.” He Zhilan sighed again, “I am a bit angry but also a bit worried about him.
I fear something might have happened to him on the way, causing him to get delayed.”
“Why worry about such a grown man?
As you said, he has been a soldier for such a long time.
If any average person ran into him, it would undoubtedly be the average person who would be at a disadvantage.
A man his size, he should be fine.
Perhaps, he simply forgot, or he was busy.
Soldiers, you know, when they get busy, they don’t even have time for a sip of water.
Maybe, he had to set off on a mission as soon as he arrived at the base, so he didn’t have time to call you.”
