Chapter 70: 70. Not Just A Warning
"A paler was sighted," Erick said halfway through the meal.
Jael's glare was instantaneous, Mauve wouldn't have seen it if she wasn't sneaking a look at him. She felt cold and watched Erick shrink back and return to his meal. The rest of the meal was in complete silence.
Mauve finished quickly, she wanted to leave the awkward scene. She dropped her cutlery and stood to her feet. Jael raised a brow at her but she didn't hold his gaze. She did a slight curtsey and fled the dining hall with her dress slightly raised.
The guards held the door open for her and she slowed down her pace as she walked past the dimly lit ballroom. She tried not to look into the corners, they always made her feel as though something was going to jump out of them.
She climbed up the stairs and into her room. She threw the door open and made her way to her bed, she sat on it and stared around her room as she wondered what she would do.
She picked up the lamp and made her way out of the room. She went up the stairs and instead of going to the library, she looked around. There wasn't anybody in sight but just to be safe she checked again as her face reddened and her heart began to race.
She took the next flight of stairs and stopped at the last step. She was surprised she could find her way this easily but by remembering the feeling of being carried she knew she was right.
She lifted the lamp to see the top of the stairs and sure enough, there was a closed door. Mauve darted her eyes around and took a step up the stairs. As soon as her feet touched the first step, her light went out as though someone had blown on it.
Mauve screamed and started to fall backward. "What are you doing here?" She heard his voice directly in her ear as he caught her.
