Vol 4. Chapter 100: Wolf Pack and Outsiders
Vol 4. Chapter 100: Wolf Pack and Outsiders
Let’s rewind to a month ago.
The mountain wolf tribe is a relatively large branch among the demon wolves.
There are over a hundred thousand mountain wolves in the entire Ten Thousand Demons Mountains, scattered throughout the region. The one where Savo is located is just a small group split off from the main tribe.
Unlike most monsters, mountain wolves like to migrate and roam around, climbing mountains and crossing ridges. Many mountain wolves will leave the tribe after reaching adulthood, venturing out to find mates and new habitats.
Therefore, although mountain wolves are widely distributed in the Ten Thousand Demons Mountains, the size of each tribe is not too large. The population of a single tribe is usually small, mostly below a thousand. The same goes for Savo’s tribe.
The core of their tribe consists of a dozen or so adult mountain wolves that migrated here about fifty years ago and occupied this mountainous area. They have all evolved into demon generals.
In addition to them, most of the tribe’s composition consists of their offspring or scattered mountain wolves who settled here after traveling and formed partnerships with them, totaling about two hundred.
Savo is the leader’s child. As the offspring of the most powerful individual in the tribe, although he is not yet an adult, he has already surpassed wolves of the same age and shown the potential to become a demon general. His father even praised him, saying that he might surpass him in the future and become a true great demon general.
Of course, as a mountain wolf, Savo will not stay in the tribe’s territory forever. Once he reaches adulthood, he will surely leave his homeland like his father did, experiencing blood and battle, and seeking new territory and desired mates.
Savo has always believed in this.
However, before he could realize such ambitions, reality played a huge joke on him.
A little over a month ago, a strange group consisting of about a dozen demon generals suddenly visited Savo’s mountain wolf tribe.
Their members were in disarray, comprising at least seven or eight different demon species mixed together, and it was unclear how they had come together.
But there is no doubt that they are very strong, just the fact that all of them are demon generals is enough to see.
Their leader is a masked man with long hair. The smell emanating from this guy is particularly strange. Savo can’t tell what kind of demon he is, but he’s definitely not a true human.
These outsiders stayed in the territory for a while under the guise of lodging. Because of their formidable strength, the mountain wolves dared not provoke them and could only acquiesce.
During this time, the leader of the group, a young man with gray hair, would go to see Savo’s father every day. His father was the leader of the tribe, a mountain wolf demon general of the fourth rank, to discuss certain matters.
Savo was not sure what they discussed, but just as this group was about to leave the territory after staying for a few days, Savo’s father suddenly found him and expressed his decision to lead the elite of the tribe, the group of demon general-level mountain wolves who migrated here with him initially, to leave the territory and do something “great” with that leader.
After a brief explanation and entrusting the tribe to Savo, the leader did not hesitate to leave with the demon generals, not even giving Savo a chance to ask questions or voice objections.
If it had ended there, perhaps it could still be considered normal. Traveling and migrating are instinctual habits of mountain wolves. Although his father’s actions were quite irresponsible, with the authority vested in him, Savo could not stop him from leaving.
As long as they kept a low profile during this time, waited for the new generation led by Savo to grow up, and reappeared a few demon general-level strong individuals, they would be able to stabilize the tribe quickly and continue to survive in this territory. It would just mean that Savo wouldn’t be able to travel again for a short time.
However, just a few days after the leader and those guys left, invaders suddenly appeared in the territory.
It was a giant snake, or rather, a serpent-type demon beast.
In terms of intelligence, demon beasts are difficult to compare with demons, but in terms of pure strength, there is no obvious superiority or inferiority between the two, it all depends on bloodline strength and individual background.
That snake possessed terrifying strength at the peak of the fourth rank, slightly surpassing Savo’s father, the former leader of the tribe. If the latter were still around, along with other strong demon generals, they would not fear the giant snake.
But now the tribe is in an unprecedented period of emptiness. Ordinary mountain wolves are basically at the third rank level, and the talented children, including Savo, are still underage and powerless to contend with it.
They struggled to protect their territory, but in less than a month, dozens of mountain wolves had succumbed to the snake’s belly, most of which were still powerful adult wolves. The weaker children and mother wolves could only hide under Savo’s leadership, living in fear every day.
Fortunately, the snake seemed to have poor vision and could only rely on its keen sense of smell to identify its targets. Savo and the others managed to survive temporarily from the snake’s hunting by using several plants with strong odors to cover the entrance of the cave.
“So that’s it. No wonder we haven’t seen a single wolf carcass in the mountains. They were all swallowed directly...”
Listening to Savo, the giant wolf that initially attacked them, explain the cause and effect, Violet understood.
She glanced at the hundreds of mountain wolves crawling around the cave, as she had initially discovered, they were mostly young wolves or relatively weak females, and Savo was already considered large among them.
It’s really tragic, the law of the jungle, survival of the fittest.
Several bonfires burning crackled, emitting an orange warm glow, but casting the shadow of the giant wolf on the ground, their expressions seemed gloomy and despondent.
“If I had another ten years, I would definitely be able to kill that foul snake with everyone’s help. But now, it’s still too forced. If it weren’t for still holding onto a glimmer of hope, and now everyone is tired and hungry, unable to travel far, I’m considering leading the tribe away from the territory and finding another place to live.”
“Really...”
Violet turned back and looked at Leila, Rene, Edwina, and Theresa. They were cooperating to provide emergency treatment to some injured mountain wolves and distributing meat stored in storage items to the hungry wolf pack.
After all, they didn’t have translation tools and couldn’t understand the wolves’ howling language, so it was better to do something meaningful.
Little Dragon Girl was sitting next to Violet on the ground, and on her right was Esther, who was also frowning around the bonfire. Finally, Miss Priestess turned her gaze back to the giant wolf in front of her.
“I know about the snake you mentioned. I can help you solve this problem, but before that, there are some questions.”
Savo nodded heavily, looking at the depressed wolf heads around him.
“Well... considering the situation, besides trusting you, there’s no other way now. Ask whatever questions you have.”
“Okay, first of all, how do you know that the snake was assigned by the masked man who came to the territory before, and not just passing by coincidentally?”
“The answer to this is simple.”
A faint puff of air emanated from the giant wolf’s nose, without hesitation.
“Smell. Mountain wolves are very sensitive to odors. That masked guy and the other high-level demons he was with had a strange smell about them. Even my father, before he left, had a faint scent of that strangeness.”
“And that giant snake that attacked us also had that same scent. I’ve fought it a few times, so I wouldn’t mistake it. As for you, especially you, you have a strange scent too, which is why I initially thought you were with him.”
“Huh?! Do I have a strange smell?”
The priestess panicked and raised her hand to sniff around, but she didn’t smell anything.
“Never mind, maybe it’s just a difference in nose structure... I have another question though. Since you’re all in such a dire situation, why not seek help from the stronger races, like the Ten Thousand Demon Alliance?”
