City of Knowledge, nestled in the Neutral Land, is situated in the western region near the Neville Federation.
Owing to the influence of the Neville Federation, the city has a high degree of commercialization.
In such a metropolis with an approximate population of eight hundred thousand, the number of commercial buildings is second only to academic buildings, ranking second among non-residential buildings.
As one can imagine, in such a city, the price of every inch of land is astronomically high; the phrase “every inch of land is worth its weight in gold” is not an understatement.
In the City of Knowledge, even though Fox Street isn’t amongst the most bustling areas in the city center, the Garden Mansion, covering more than one square kilometer right in the middle of the street, holds a striking market value.
The price for just the land it covers would probably exceed five hundred thousand gold coins.
If you factor in the buildings and gardens on it, some even estimate its total price to be close to a million gold coins.
What’s peculiar is that the owner of this grand mansion, despite being so wealthy, hasn’t hired any housemaids or servants.
Instead, a cleaning crew is contracted to maintain the cleanliness of the mansion every few days, or a gardener to trim the lawn in the yard whenever she is gone for long periods.
Most of the time, people will see the knight girl, the owner of the mansion, and the priestess girl, the first resident, diligently managing the huge building and garden themselves.
This diligence forms one of the reasons why local business owners hold a fondness for the girls in Garden Mansion.
However, today, the knight girl Catherine is not in the garden, but rather sitting solemnly in the living room.
Across from her, Pannis is sitting gravely on a chair, her eyes downcast towards the ground, appearing like a reprimanded child.
“Do you have any idea how many cries for help I received from our neighbors last night?
Fifteen times, full fifteen times!
We’ve only been back for a day, and I’m already getting fifteen requests for help or complaints — all related to you!” Catherine roared in frustration, waving the papers in her hand, “Check this out, see for yourself.”
“‘I had just finished closing up the shop yesterday and was ready to go home when I felt someone watching me from behind.
It had gotten dark, so when I turned to look, I couldn’t see clearly, but there was a silhouette lurking around the far corner.
By the time I tried to get a clearer look, the silhouette had disappeared.
Sob, sob.
Was it a ghost?’ This is from Luna, the attendant at the tailor shop.
Don’t tell me this isn’t your doing, you haven’t been causing these types of incidents all the way back from Crying Cave.”
“And look at this, a statement from the owner of the roast fish shop.
‘Miss Catherine, although I’m grateful for your patronage, could you please talk to your friend about giving our little shop a chance.
This morning, since the moment we opened our door, your friend came in and ordered only the three special discounted roast fishes we offer today.
You know, our special discounted fishes are merely thirty percent of the regular price, we’re selling at a loss just for promotion, but your friend only orders those discounted fishes, and sat in the shop all morning until every last bit of our discount fishes was sold out.
If he does this every day, we genuinely can’t manage to stay in business.’ Now look at this — does grilled fish really taste that good?
Going only for the specials, you ate till the shop owner is nearly in tears.
Where’s your professional dignity?
Was it eaten by you too?”
“And this one, from Jenny, the doctor’s daughter and part-time nurse, ‘Wah, Sister Catherine, it’s dreadful — truly dreadful.
Just now, when I went into the clinic’s backyard to collect the uniforms that had been drying since morning, I saw a weirdo squatting on top of the wall.
He was giggling at my uniform and looked like he was daydreaming.
When he saw me, he asked me my name, age, and address with such a lewd face.
Wah, it’s too scary, Sister Catherine, has a ** come into our vicinity?’ You’ve done a fantastic job, haven’t you?
Jenny is only fourteen, only fourteen!
Can you believe it, daydreaming about a fourteen-year-old’s ** uniform!
Are you a scum_bag or what?”
“And also this, from Bill, the shop assistant at the item shop.
‘Miss Catherine, could you please ask your friend not to sleep in my backyard tree again?
After my lunch this noon, when I was passing through my backyard, I saw your friend lying on top of the tree, sound asleep and even drooling — it gave me a frightful start.
Please talk to him.
It’s really dangerous to sleep like that, what if he falls, it won’t be a minor issue.’ Are you a cat?
Always have to climb onto branches to sleep?
Don’t you have a bed at home?
Or even a room?
Why must you act like a cat?
And not just with the sleeping, also drooling in your sleep.
Are you not ashamed at all?!?”
Catherine fell into a face of despair, holding her head and moaning, “Fifteen times, a total of fifteen times in just one day.
Four times flirting with women, twice followed women, twice stalked them for a long time, made three shop owners cry, once slept in someone’s tree, twice attacked other customers in a shop with evil words causing them to pass out, and even made a little girl cry for two hours when her parents were not looking by pulling faces at her!!!!
I ask you, are you that desperate?
Your defensive range covers all females from the age of forty to fourteen who are even slightly good-looking.
Are you that hungry?
Are you that sleep-deprived?
And you outright made people faint in shock, you are really something.
Most infuriating is the last one, I know you professionals can make some pretty weird faces because of your control over your bodies, but is it that fun to threaten a four-year-old-girl??
Oh god, save me.”
“Eh, that’s not right…” Pannis suddenly raised his head, saying quite seriously, “I only stalked a girl once yesterday.”
“You dare utter another word, you dare,” Catherine was slapping the table madly, and ultimately slumped onto the table, deflated, “I know, you’ve just come to terms with yourself, you’re ready to live out your true self, but don’t you think that what you’re doing now is a bit excessive?”
“Excessive?” Pannis scratched his head, “I didn’t think so.
See that the pursuit of beautiful women is a desire buried deep in every man’s soul, the pursuit of good food is the most basic desire of every being.
Taking a quick rest when tired isn’t a big deal, as for the little girl at last, well, that was purely accidental, I just wanted to make her laugh, who knew she had no sense of humor and ended up crying instead.”
“Ah, Pannis,” Catherine massaged her forehead, speaking with a headache, “Do you really think acting like this is facing yourself and living out who you are?”
“Isn’t it?” Pannis asked confused, “Didn’t you say before?
Cry when you want to cry, laugh when you want to laugh, do what makes you happy, do what leaves you with no regrets, isn’t that facing one’s true self?”
“I understand, you’ve suppressed your true self from a young age and don’t know how to act like a normal person, that’s why you’re doing this,” Catherine sighed, “Indeed, as you said, I did say all those things, but have you ever considered, while you may enjoy doing certain things, some innocent and good people might be negatively impacted by your actions.
When someone is hurting or their lives are affected because of your happiness, wouldn’t you feel guilty?”
Pannis fell silent and fell into thought.
Seeing Pannis take her advice to heart, Catherine breathed a sigh of relief and continued, “So, what I mentioned earlier about facing your true self is indeed true, but, that is based on not having a negative impact on others.
If your happiness is built on the suffering and fear of innocent people and you still choose to do it, then that’s not authenticity, but selfishness.
Only selfish people would act solely on their desires and tastes without considering others’ feelings, a normal person wouldn’t do so.”
“I think I kind of get it now,” Pannis said thoughtfully.
“If I look back, even though what I did yesterday was fun at the time, I did cause others trouble, and that does make me feel regretful.
So, I was conflicted between doing what makes me happy and what won’t make me regret it afterwards.
Now I understand.
If I did those things and caused others trouble, then I would only feel regret, not happiness.
So, those things couldn’t be considered as bringing me genuine happiness.
I didn’t keep a good balance between the two.”
“Exactly.” Catherine clapped her hands in agreement.
“You finally understood.”
“Yes, I understood,” Pannis nodded, “so…”
“So?” Catherine asked.
With a heavy face, Pannis hung his head in silence for a moment.
Suddenly, he lifted his head, revealing a broad smile, and gave a thumbs-up, saying, “So, in the future, when I’m stalking and peeping, I’ll be careful not to be discovered by them, so as not to cause them trouble.”
“You bastard, I’m sure you said that on purpose.” Catherine became enraged, chasing Pannis around, brandishing papers in her hand, “I’ll kill you.
Don’t run, let me kill you.”
“Ah, how lively.
As expected, big sister is nagging again.
Pannis, what did you do to piss her off and make her so energetic early in the morning?” Lina’s languorous voice came from the stairs.
Wearing a white pajama printed with pink petals, her messy silver hair all over the place, she yawned as she came down the stairs, mumbling out questions and bumping into a column in the living room in the process.
“Ouch, that hurts.
Big sister, why did you hit me?” Lina, still half asleep, muttered nonsense.
“It would be better if it bumped you to death, you fool.” Catherine glared at Pannis and stopped chasing him.
She walked over and looked at Lina’s pure white forehead, which didn’t even have a red mark on it.
She bent her finger and added a thump to it.
“Where is Vivian?
Has she not gotten up yet?”
“That lazybones.” Lina finally woke up, habitually struggling to sort out her waist-length silver hair, while badmouthing Vivian, “No way she’s getting up before nine o’clock.”
“Both of you are lazybones.” Catherine reached out and messed up Lina’s hair again, ignoring her protests.
“Go take a bath, I’ll make breakfast.”
“No!” Pannis loudly stopped Catherine and asked Lina, “Why do you two let Catherine cook every day?”
“Because neither Vivian nor I can cook.” Lina looked at Pannis with innocent eyes.
“Is there a problem?”
“Hehe, hehe, a chef who can fry an egg into seven different colors.” Pannis said with a dry laugh, “It’s truly a miracle that you three are still alive.”
“Hmm, I don’t know if it’s a miracle or not,” Lina pointed behind Pannis, “but I do know that if you don’t start thinking about the eulogy for your funeral now, you might not get another chance.”
“Uh.” Pannis felt the chill of two glares boring into his back, an ominous aura surging up.
This scared a burst of Aggression out of him as he dashed into the kitchen at lightning speed, “I’ll cook breakfast, I didn’t say a thing.”
Lina rubbed her eyes innocently, shrugged at Catherine, and staggered toward the bathroom.
