Chapter 131: Ability Hunters
Chapter 131: Ability Hunters
Boom! Boom! Boom!
On a street teeming with zombies, a heavy-duty truck with a bulldozer blade carved out a bloody path. Behind it, an armored bus packed with women and children, along with several off-road vehicles and pickups, sped through the chaos. People on the vehicles fired frantically at their relentless pursuers.
"They're catching up!" the driver of a pickup truck shouted after glancing at the rearview mirror.
"D**n it!" The convoy leader, a middle-aged man with a blood-streaked forehead, sat in the passenger seat of an off-road vehicle. Looking at the endless zombie horde ahead, he gritted his teeth. "Why the hell are all these zombies swarming us?!"
"Rocket launcher!!"
A panicked voice screamed through the walkie-talkie.
Whoosh! Boom!
A trailing off-road vehicle exploded in a fiery blast, the force flipping it over. The people inside turned into blazing fireballs in an instant.
"Ah Jie! Li Qian!!"
The middle-aged man let out a desperate roar, but the walkie-talkie only responded with silence."Screw it, let's fight!!"
His eyes glowed with fury as deep crimson scales spread across his neck and face. His hands transformed into massive beast-like claws, resembling those of a Tyrannosaurus. Without hesitation, he kicked open the door and climbed onto the car roof.
The other team members' eyes turned bloodshot with rage. At once, a dozen firearms unleashed a storm of bullets at the approaching enemy vehicles.
Several hundred meters behind them, three black semi-trucks, covered in green graffiti, led a fleet of armored war vehicles, each modified for combat. A blonde thug, his face covered in tattoos, stood atop one of the SUVs, gripping a rocket launcher. Despite the apocalypse, he still had a cigarette dangling from his lips, grinning maniacally as he admired the wreckage ahead.
"Hahaha! Got 'em! Got 'em!" He slapped the car roof excitedly. "Boss, let Lolo hit ‘em harder! Let's trap them completely!"
The driver, a man in his early thirties with a buzz cut and a sinister expression, was the leader of the four-person crew—Qiu Long.
With a lazy smirk, he picked up the walkie-talkie and spoke in a languid tone, "Slow down. We're entering Yubei City. Don't stir up too many zombies and trigger a chain reaction."
"Boss, slow down? Why?!" Blonde Thug looked confused.
"You know sh*t," Qiu Long sneered, his gaze locked onto the fleeing convoy. He spoke with eerie calm, "Having someone clear the road for us isn’t a bad thing. They can't escape anyway. The real thrill is in the hunt."
"Hehehe, got it, got it."
At the front of the semi-trucks, a burly man drove while a punk-styled woman with short purple hair and a lip piercing lounged beside him. Her eerie green eyes flickered slightly as her ability weakened just a bit.
She shot the driver a sharp look. "You heard him. Slow down."
"Got it," the burly driver muttered, forcing a grin. But a flicker of resentment flashed in his eyes.
If Lin Xian were here, he would have recognized this driver instantly—Zhou Lei, the same man who shot Qian Yu in cold blood at Beiwang Outpost and fled with a stolen vehicle. Despite his outwardly honest demeanor, his eyes were always brimming with ruthless cunning.
That night, he barely escaped the outpost thanks to the chaos caused by the zombie horde. After looting half of the Black Jiao Convoy’s supply trucks, he gathered his remaining men and picked up a few new recruits along the way—including a mutant ability user. His group had grown significantly, almost reaching mid-tier status.
But then they crossed paths with the Black Crow Four. The infamous gang raided them mercilessly, swallowing his entire convoy whole. With no way to resist, Zhou Lei was forced to submit, becoming nothing more than the driver of their lead truck.
As for the purple-haired woman beside him—Lolo—she was ranked third in the Black Crow Four. Zhou Lei had witnessed her terrifying ability firsthand. She could manipulate zombies into frenzies, triggering chain reactions that led them to attack designated targets. It was downright monstrous.
Under Lolo’s influence, the zombies that had been surging toward the fleeing convoy suddenly slowed. However, the chaos in the city had already spiraled beyond her control. The entire area had turned into a frenzied battlefield, with both convoys attracting more and more zombies.
Ratatatatat!!
The gunfire intensified. The heavy-duty truck plowed through skulls, leaving a trail of crushed corpses in its wake.
Qiu Long watched as an ability user from the escaping convoy leaped onto the roof of their own vehicle and then, with a burst of speed, lunged straight toward them.
He scoffed. "A beast-type ability user? Not even evolved yet. What a waste of time."
Picking up his walkie-talkie, he casually ordered, "Guo Er, he’s yours."
"Got it!"
As soon as he spoke, the passenger door of another truck swung open. A long-haired, dazed-looking young man—his face twisted with an unsettling grin—suddenly leaped out.
For a split second, it seemed like he would plunge straight into the zombie horde below. But then—fwip!—a pair of gray-black wings sprouted from his back, and with a powerful flap, he soared into the sky, shooting toward the beast-transformed middle-aged man.
"Grandpa's here to teach you a lesson!" he cackled, his speed terrifyingly fast.
The middle-aged ability user, furious at the challenge, let out a snarl. His body continued transforming as his beast claws lashed out at the airborne attacker.
Whoosh!
The powerful strike tore through the air, but to his shock, Guo Er didn’t even dodge. Instead, he countered with a single punch—clang!—sending sparks flying.
The middle-aged man’s eyes widened in disbelief. His claws had hit something metallic. A closer look revealed Guo Er's right arm gleaming with a mechanical sheen—his joints were made of steel.
"A mechanical prosthetic?!"
"Pathetic!" Guo Er sneered. In a blink, he twisted around, gripped the middle-aged man’s throat, and, with a powerful flap of his wings, dragged him skyward.
"AAARGH!!"
The man thrashed wildly, his scales spreading as his transformation intensified. One claw locked onto Guo Er’s prosthetic arm while the other lashed toward his gut.
But Guo Er wasn’t giving him the chance. Mid-flight, he suddenly loosened his grip—whoosh!—dropping his prey from the sky.
Before the man could react, he slammed straight into the path of an oncoming truck.
Boom!
The gruesome impact sent his body crashing into a storefront, his fate unknown.
"WHOOO!!"
The scene drew cheers from Lolo and the gang. The man hadn’t even landed a proper hit before being obliterated.
Still hovering mid-air, Guo Er chuckled. "Another beast-type ability user? Wonder if he can enhance my evolution… Whatever, I'll just keep trying till I find the right one—"
Huh?
Mid-sentence, he suddenly noticed something in the distance. His eyes narrowed as he peered toward a massive rail line a few streets away.
A heavily armored train, escorted by dozens of vehicles, was speeding along the tracks.
Guo Er’s grin vanished. He grabbed his walkie-talkie.
"Boss, you won’t believe this. We just ran into an old friend—it's that train from Qu Guan."
Inside an off-road vehicle, Qiu Long’s expression shifted.
"Well, well… what a coincidence."
"Boss!" Blonde Thug leaned back into his seat, scowling. "Last time, that b**tard Jiang Yun let all those fat fish slip through our fingers. We need payback!"
"You think I don’t know that?" Qiu Long smirked and picked up his walkie-talkie.
"Lolo, send the zombies to cut off their convoy. Everyone else—take the next turn!"
"Move in!"
