Sheng Xian rubbed his temples and clicked on the mouse to select a few audio clips and pressed delete.
The computer popped up a confirmation dialog box.
Staring at the screen, it was as if he was struggling with himself, and after a moment, he slowly let go of the mouse.
When he got home, his phone was almost out of battery, so he left it charging in the bedroom.
He had a habit of reading before bed. After shutting down the computer, he took a bath and then picked out a book to read in the bedroom. Leaning against the headboard, he turned up the light above and opened the book.
He hadn’t read more than a few pages before the phone charging next to him vibrated.
He unplugged the charger and held the phone in front of him, only to realize that in the short time he hadn’t checked his phone, she had sent him a string of messages.
Lu Jingyan, “Are you really my brother?”
Lu Jingyan, “Starting to act cool and ignore people again, aggrieved.jpg”
Lu Jingyan, “What are you so proud of, it’s only because I spoil you that you can act so arrogant.”
Lu Jingyan, “If you don’t show up, I’m going to stop talking to you for thirty minutes.”
Thirty minutes later, Lu Jingyan, “It’s been thirty minutes, can brother show up now?”
Lu Jingyan, “Brother, don’t you have anything to say to me?”
Lu Jingyan, “Do you really have nothing to say to me?”
All a bunch of rather uninteresting messages.
Sheng Xian scrolled down the screen and, as he read, let out a soft chuckle.
Elementary school students are indeed immature, sending messages like a child playing house, talking to a bunch of dolls.
It really made one want to tease her.
Sheng Xian was completely unaware of how terrifying the thought that momentarily crossed his mind was, as he held his phone and replied, “Yes.”
“I have something to say to you.”
Lu Jingyan responded almost instantly as if she had been waiting by her phone for his message, “What is it?”
Sheng Xian, “Drink more warm water.”
…
As she saw these four words from Sheng Xian, Lu Jingyan paused for three seconds, recalling what she had said to him in the car, “It’s okay if you don’t buy the medicine, but you didn’t even tell me to drink more warm water.”
Lu Jingyan, “…”
She was suspicious that he didn’t have anything to say but was purposefully aggravating her.
Lu Jingyan put down her phone and got out of bed to take a shower.
…
Sheng Xian waited for a while, but seeing that Lu Jingyan didn’t send any more messages, he set his phone aside and continued reading his book. As he read, his thoughts started to drift quite far.
According to their family relations, he was Chen Kai’s cousin.
But in reality, Chen Kai’s aunt, who was his father’s current wife, had no blood relation to him.
Thus, his relationship with Chen Kai wasn’t as close as other cousins who were related by blood.
Every year, he received a call inviting him to Chen Kai’s birthday parties, and normally he would send a gift, but he wouldn’t attend.
If he hadn’t checked Chen Kai’s social media that evening and hadn’t seen her in one of the photos in Chen Kai’s social media updates, this year would have been no different.
He actually found it quite absurd; the girl had lived for over twenty years, she lived just fine without knowing him, there was really no need for him to worry unreasonably. Yet, he ended up calling Chen Kai to ask for his address.
From a distance, he thought the person smoking by the roadside was her.
As he got closer, it indeed was her.
The dim streetlight fell quietly on her head, casting a hazy and softly glowing aura around her.
Her lips were red, her teeth were white, and her hair was black and thick, showing no gaps as she leaned her head slightly to light her cigarette, exuding a vintage Hong Kong style.
She was truly beautiful.
The phrase “glitz and glamor” perfectly exemplified her.
But for some reason, through her splendor, he saw loneliness.
