Chapter 37 - 37 37 Health Maintenance
?Chapter 37: Chapter 37 Health Maintenance Chapter 37: Chapter 37 Health Maintenance The second brother mentioned by Lu Hongcheng is her cousin, Lu Hongcheng’s second son.
Lu Jingyan actually rarely talked back to Lu Hongcheng, but she didn’t know what was wrong today, she just couldn’t control herself, “And then? Once the second brother secures the project, does it no longer matter whether or not I consider Mr. Yang?”
This wasn’t the first time something like this had happened.
There had been previous occasions when she thought Lu Hongcheng was genuinely arranging a blind date for her, only to find out later that it was just to facilitate some partnership.
Sometimes she wondered, if she were his real daughter, would he have had the heart to use her like this.
Lu Jingyan scoffed and lowered her head, her voice calm, “Actually, there’s no need for all this trouble. You could just have my second brother wear women’s clothes or take a trip to Thailand. That could solve everything. I suggest the women’s clothes—it’s more convenient, just in case he meets someone who likes men.”
Lu Hongcheng was stunned for a while, then the realization hit him, and he suddenly burst into fury, “What kind of attitude is this? Who did you learn this from, showing no respect for your elders? Your second brother is not someone you can talk about like this.”
Lu Hongcheng was quite good at lecturing people, probably really angered by her, he couldn’t think of more to say at the moment.
His face was flushed as he glared at Lu Jingyan for a few seconds before he burst out, “Pull over!”
“Stop the car right now!”
The secretary driving in front immediately pulled the car over to the side of the road.
Lu Hongcheng pointed toward the outside, “Get out, get out of the car right now!”
Lu Jingyan put on her coat unhurriedly, and, with a calm face, picked up her bag and got out of the car.
The car door closed a second before she shut it and the car sped away the next second.
Lu Jingyan, as if nothing had happened, walked to the roadside, leaned over the guardrail, and looked down. The smog was heavy tonight; the entire city was shrouded in grey. She squinted her eyes and struggled to see clearly before finally making out the nearby road sign.
“Darn.” She should have endured a few more minutes. It would have been better to speak after this stretch of highway without any villages or stores.
On the main road, all private cars passed by. Lu Jingyan stood by the cold railing for a while, not a single taxi came, so she took out her phone from her bag. She opened WeChat, glanced at Sheng Xian at the top pinned position, pursed her lips, and scrolled down.
She found Chen Kai and sent him her location.
Lu Jingyan: “Pick me up.”
In less than ten minutes, the extremely flashy sports car Chen Kai had bought himself on his birthday stopped in front of her.
Getting into the car, Lu Jingyan asked, “How come you arrived so quickly?”
“I was at the bar nearby. I had just ordered a drink, hadn’t even taken a sip when I got your message,” he paused, then Chen Kai asked, “What are you doing here?”
Lu Jingyan let out a sound, “Ah,” but didn’t speak.
Chen Kai glanced at her and didn’t ask any more questions.
After a while, Chen Kai asked, “Do you want to have a drink?”
Lu Jingyan looked out the window, lazily, “Sure, let’s drink.”
Lu Jingyan didn’t ask Chen Kai who he had planned to meet, and Chen Kai didn’t mention it either.
At the bar, the spot Chen Kai had booked was still empty.
Lu Jingyan and Chen Kai sat down facing each other.
Chen Kai deftly pulled out a pack of cigarettes, tapped one out, and offered it to Lu Jingyan, “Want one?”
Lu Jingyan shook her head, her fingertips twirling the glass’s rim, “Quit.”
Chen Kai held the cigarette in his lips, lit the lighter, “Why’d you suddenly decide to quit smoking?”
Lu Jingyan looked up coolly, “For health reasons.”
Chen Kai chuckled, “You? Health? I don’t buy that.”
Lu Jingyan rolled her eyes, ignoring him.
She sipped half a glass of wine, then, under the table, kicked Chen Kai’s leg with the tip of her shoe, “Hey, I have a question.”
Chen Kai blew a puff of smoke towards her, “Ask away, Miss.”
Lu Jingyan frowned and waved away the smoke, “About your cousin, where did he go to elementary, middle, and high school?”
Chen Kai shook his head, “No idea.”
Lu Jingyan stared at him expressionlessly.
“I really don’t know. I’m not lying to you. I only met my cousin last year.”
Lu Jingyan was somewhat surprised, “Last year?”
“Yes, strictly speaking, Sheng Xian isn’t really my cousin. We have no blood relation. He is the son of my aunt’s husband and his ex-wife. My aunt later had my little cousin and little sister, who are half-siblings to my cousin on their father’s side. I knew my aunt’s husband had a son earlier, but I never met him until last year. So, I don’t know much about my cousin’s past.”
“I see,” Lu Jingyan paused, then asked, “So, are you and your cousin close now?”
“Pretty close. He’s much closer to me than to those two younger siblings at his home.”
The two younger ones Chen Kai referred to are Sheng Xian’s half-brother and half-sister.
Lu Jingyan blinked, “Did your cousin ever mention any girl he chased in the past?”
“No.”
“How about a white moonlight? The kind who you secretly hold dear in your heart.”
“No as well.”
“…”
Chen Kai, “What are you asking these for?”
“Nothing much, just trying to gauge how close you really are with your cousin.” After getting nothing out of Chen Kai, Lu Jingyan cursed him silently then said formally, “It seems you and your cousin aren’t close at all.”
