Chapter 45 - 45 45 Just kidding
?Chapter 45: Chapter 45 Just kidding Chapter 45: Chapter 45 Just kidding He took a two-second look, crouched down, picked up her scattered shoelace, wiped off the dirt with his sleeve, and tied a beautiful bow for her.
It wasn’t until Sheng Xian stood up that Lu Jingyan realized he should draw his foot back.
She stared at the tied shoelace, her mouth opening slightly, as an indescribable emotion flooded her heart in an instant.
After two seconds, she looked up at Sheng Xian.
Perhaps influenced by that inexplicable emotion, the panic in her heart subsided a lot, and her mind gradually cleared.
Sheng Xian saw that she remained silent and asked again, “Are you okay?”
Lu Jingyan let out an “Ah”, thought about her earlier faux pas, and forced a smile: “Yeah, of course, I’m fine.”
She didn’t want to linger on this topic too long and, without waiting for Sheng Xian to speak, she casually changed the subject: “By the way, I just sent a WeChat message saying I wanted to ask you something, remember?”
Sheng Xian: “Mhm.”
“It’s…” Lu Jingyan paused, then came up with something random: “How do you pay the electricity bill online? It seems we’re out of power at home.”
Sheng Xian glanced at the villa behind her. It was pitch-dark, as if the lights were off, uncertain whether it was a real or fake power outage. He looked into her eyes, remained silent for a moment, and asked, “Did you come out here just to ask me this?”
“Ah, yes.” Lu Jingyan nodded: “Just to ask you this.”
To make it sound believable, Lu Jingyan thought for a moment, then added: “I don’t like it when there’s not a single light. I can’t sleep without electricity.”
Suddenly, Sheng Xian just looked at her and said nothing.
Lu Jingyan, puzzled, met his gaze for a while and noticed something off in his eyes, as if he was trying to see past her feigned composure into her heart.
Lu Jingyan felt she should appear more composed; after all, Sheng Xian couldn’t read minds.
But after a standoff with him, she still conceded defeat.
She blinked her eyes and decided to throw the question back at him: “You… you don’t know how to pay the electric bill, do you?”
Sheng Xian: “…”
“What about fixing toilets?”
Seeing that Sheng Xian still didn’t seem to get her point, she clicked her tongue in disappointment and said: “Turns out Professor Sheng can’t do everything—”
“…”
Ordinarily, upon hearing her nonsensical talk, Sheng Xian would either walk away without stooping to the level of a child or explain things to her with a mix of headache and resignation.
But this time, Sheng Xian simply kept quiet, staring at her intently, as if trying to see right through her.
Lu Jingyan started to feel guilty for no reason, and pretended to be very composed as she cleared her throat and took out her phone with an impassive face: “Never mind, I’ll ask the property management to check it out.”
As she said this, Lu Jingyan pointed at Sheng Xian’s car: “It’s late, brother, you should head back.”
Sheng Xian watched Lu Jingyan pretend to look for a phone number for two more seconds. Perhaps it was her calling him “brother”, but he finally moved his lips: “Lu Jingyan.”
Lu Jingyan looked up: “Huh?”
Sheng Xian tapped on the watch on his wrist: “At this hour, the property management is already off duty.”
Lu Jingyan: “…Is that so?”
She pressed her screen and checked the time.
They were off duty.
At this time of night, even if someone was on call, it would only be security personnel.
“No problem, I’ll call Auntie Sun; she usually handles these things.”
Before Lu Jingyan could continue pretending to look for Auntie Sun’s number, Sheng Xian’s bland voice came through again: “Lu Jingyan, at this hour, Auntie might be asleep.”
“…”
Sheng Xian: “Do you think it’s appropriate to disturb someone’s sleep in the middle of the night?”
“…”
Lu Jingyan didn’t think there was anything inappropriate about it, considering her home wasn’t really without power, and she wasn’t actually going to call Auntie Sun.
It was just an excuse, but she couldn’t tell Sheng Xian that what she said was just to tease him.
While Lu Jingyan was contemplating how to respond to Sheng Xian, he suddenly said, “Let’s go.”
Lu Jingyan: “Go where?”
“To my house.”
