?Chapter 55: Chapter 55 Password Chapter 55: Chapter 55 Password Her mom said, “Lu Jingyan, be sensible at school. Your dad and I are very busy, so don’t keep causing us trouble.”
Her mother left after dropping that sentence.
Not to mention giving her a chance to explain, she didn’t even ask what exactly happened at school that afternoon with her classmates.
Normally, she could attribute their indifference to their busyness, but in that moment, as she watched her mother get into the car and drive away without hesitation, she realized that it wasn’t because they were too busy to care for her, but because she wasn’t that important to them.
For a long time afterward, she wondered, if she wasn’t important to them, why did they bother to have her?
Unfortunately, she never found the answer before they left.
Lu Jingyan leaned her head against the wall, standing quietly until Auntie Sun hung up the phone before she came out.
Auntie Sun felt she had been too abrupt in asking for help just now, and hesitated for a long time as she watched Lu Jingyan, about to head upstairs with her phone, before she couldn’t help but call out, “Miss Lu.”
Lu Jingyan stopped, turned her head with an expressionless face.
“About what I said in the restaurant just now, don’t take it to heart. I was just really worried,” she said.
Lu Jingyan nodded her head and said nothing, stepping up the stairs to the upper floor.
After closing her room’s door, she sighed, stared out the window for a while, then went into the walk-in closet.
After changing her clothes, she took the car keys and headed straight for the elevator to the garage.
It was only when she was stuck on the Fourth Ring Road that she came to her senses.
The sun was setting, casting a golden hue across the entire road, the rows of red taillights flickering on and off.
Who knows which irritable driver was continuously honking his horn.
In the midst of the blaring horn, Lu Jingyan blinked her eyes.
Why had she come out?
Where was she heading?
Following the flow of traffic, Lu Jingyan slowly drove forward. After that stretch, the street suddenly cleared, allowing her to speed up. She drove along the Fourth Ring Road for a while before taking the exit up ahead.
She stopped at a supermarket along the way, bought a large bag of beer, and upon returning to her car, entered Sheng Xian’s residential address into the navigation system.
By the time she reached the entrance of Sheng Xian’s community, it was completely dark.
The community’s security was strict; outside vehicles were not allowed inside.
Lu Jingyan parked her car casually by the roadside, then carried the big bag of beer she had bought into the community.
Last time, Sheng Xian had taken her directly to the underground parking lot, so she wasn’t familiar with the above-ground routes and took several turns before she found Sheng Xian’s building.
She looked up, counting the floors one by one until she got to Sheng Xian’s. Seeing that his light was off, she found a spot in the community to sit down.
It was very cold, and she was wearing very little, but she didn’t want to go back to the car. So, she squatted outside, opened a can of beer, and drank by herself.
From where she sat, she could see everyone coming in and out of Sheng Xian’s building.
She counted every person that passed by until the light in Sheng Xian’s apartment turned on when she reached thirty.
He must have driven out and come back, returning straight home from the underground parking lot.
Lu Jingyan raised her head, staring at Sheng Xian’s floor, downed the beer in her hand in one gulp, and with a practiced motion, she flicked her wrist and tossed the can precisely into a nearby recycling bin.
To press the call button or not to press the call button?
Lu Jingyan sat blankly for quite a while, unable to find an answer, so she just stretched out her cold hand, took out another can from the bag beside her, and opened it with a snap of her fingers.
The beer in the bag dwindled one can after another.
As it emptied, Lu Jingyan still hadn’t made a decision.
Bowling her head, she absent-mindedly fiddled with the last empty can, sitting expressionlessly for a long time before letting out a long sigh, tossing the can into the trash bin, and standing up to leave with her bag.
Before she could take a step, her phone in the bag vibrated.
She took out her phone, and Lu Jingyan was surprised to see the notification on the screen.
It was a message from Sheng Xian, who had never initiated contact with her before.
He had sent a six-digit number.
The six digits had no apparent pattern.
Just as she was about to reply and ask what it meant,
her phone vibrated twice more.
Sheng Xian: “Password.”
Sheng Xian: “That’s the code for the front gate and the elevator.”
