Chapter 59 - 59 59 Youre Peeping on Me
?Chapter 59: Chapter 59 You’re Peeping on Me Chapter 59: Chapter 59 You’re Peeping on Me Sheng Xian asked, “Why were you at the bottom of my building?”
He had seen her car outside, so upon returning to the neighborhood, he searched around and, sure enough, found her squatting by the flowerbed at the bottom of the building, braving the cold wind with a drink in her hand.
She frequently looked up, extending a finger to count the floors until she found his, then she stopped looking.
Several times she stood up, approached the building’s entrance, then retreated, seemingly annoyed at her own hesitation to make a decision, crushing several empty cans in her hand.
Sheng Xian glanced at Lu Jingyan, “Sneaky as a paparazzo.”
After a pause, considering those victimized empty cans, he added, “You’ve got quite the strength, and your aim is pretty good, too.”
Lu Jingyan didn’t immediately grasp the meaning behind Sheng Xian’s latter comment; it took her a couple of seconds to realize he was describing the empty cans she had crushed and thrown into the trash can from a distance.
She lifted her head so many times, yet she never saw his figure in front of his window.
How could he know about it?
And to know with such detail.
Lu Jingyan said with a deadpan face, “You’re spying on me.”
Sheng Xian: “…”
Goddammit, she accused him of spying on her.
Sheng Xian almost laughed at her baseless counterattack, his face remained expressionless as he ignored her allegation, getting back to the point, “Did you come to find me because you needed something?”
He indeed realized that she had something on her mind.
Lu Jingyan carelessly uttered, “Huh, nope, just missed big brother, came down to big brother’s place, had a little drink, breathed in the air surrounding big brother’s home, quite enjoyable.”
Sheng Xian wasn’t the type to dig deep for answers, he watched Lu Jingyan in silence for a while, didn’t call out her nonsense, and started the car again.
Lu Jingyan didn’t speak either; the car was quiet on the way back to her place.
As Lu Jingyan watched the night scenery from the window, she felt there was something odd about the atmosphere between them.
When they arrived at Lu Jingyan’s house, Sheng Xian drove directly into the garage, parked the car, and then handed her back the keys.
Lu Jingyan didn’t accept them, “You take my car and go.”
Sheng Xian, “No need, I’ll take a taxi.”
Lu Jingyan acknowledged with an “Oh,” not insisting, and took back the keys.
The two of them exited the car one after the other; Lu Jingyan with her eyes smiling, waved to him, “Goodbye, big brother.”
She was no different than usual, still calling him “big brother” every other word, with a sweetness that could cloy.
Sheng Xian remained silent, let her walk a few steps toward the elevator, then called out, “Lu Jingyan.”
Lu Jingyan turned around, “Huh?”
Sheng Xian looked at her for a few seconds, “Do you have anything else you want to tell me?”
Lu Jingyan opened her mouth.
She thought she had concealed it well. Whenever she called her parents as a child with something on her mind, they would quickly say they were busy and hang up. Later, when they met, they would occasionally ask if she had called for a reason, but by that time she had already lost the urge to speak and would calmly shake her head, saying she just missed them.
Her parents always believed her.
She had once been quite pleased with herself, thinking she had perfected the art of feigning indifference to a sublime level.
Even Chen Kai and Song Xian, who knew her for so long and understood her so well, couldn’t see through her.
She thought Sheng Xian would be the same.
Lu Jingyan looked at Sheng Xian, at a loss for how to react, but not wanting to seem sluggish, she slowly said, “There’s still something I wanted to say.”
As she spoke, her mind raced. She thought about how Sheng Xian could observe her actions from his place so many floors up with such detail, and said expressionlessly, “You have pretty good eyesight.”
Sheng Xian: “…”
He had been waiting the whole night for her to speak up, and now it seemed unlikely she would.
Sheng Xian felt a bit irked, although he didn’t know exactly what he was irked about.
He watched her fall silent again, waited a few more seconds, then turned and walked away.
Watching Sheng Xian’s retreating back, Lu Jingyan moved her lips, wanting to call out to him, but ultimately she did not.
It wasn’t until Sheng Xian’s figure had disappeared that Lu Jingyan turned and walked toward the elevator.
She didn’t understand what was going on with her; she felt empty inside and a bit aimless.
Professor Sheng had spotted something was off with her and had asked her several times, but she chose not to speak. Now that he was gone, she felt lost for no reason.
Since when had she become so sentimental?
Lu Jingyan muttered to herself while stepping out of the elevator.
She had just reached the bedroom door when her cellphone chimed.
Pulling it out, she saw it was Sheng Xian who had just left.
Sheng Xian, “My phone doesn’t turn off at night.”
Lu Jingyan’s eyes suddenly felt a little sore.
She turned her head away, pursed her lips, and, pretending she hadn’t seen the message, pushed open the door, tossed the phone onto the bed, and entered the bathroom.
Standing under the shower, she tilted her head up, letting the warm water cascade over her. Although her eyes were closed, water managed to seep in, stinging and swelling.
He was the first person whom she hadn’t been able to deceive.
He had given her two chances, and she hadn’t taken them. When he turned around to leave in the garage, she felt he was a bit petulant.
But then he had sent her another message right after turning around.
Lu Jingyan wasn’t certain if her brain was malfunctioning, but she actually thought Sheng Xian was somewhat indulging her.
Lu Jingyan took a deep breath, raised her hand to smack the faucet off, randomly grabbed a towel to wrap around herself, and rushed out of the bathroom.
She found her phone on the bed, pulled up Sheng Xian’s number, and dialed it without hesitation.
The phone rang once and was answered.
Lu Jingyan didn’t wait for Sheng Xian on the other end of the line to speak and blurted out, “I’m contacting you because I need help.”
Her tone was urgent, almost aggressively so, as if she was picking a fight.
There was a pause from Sheng Xian on the other end of the line.
Lu Jingyan bit her lip and then added, “I want to ask you for a favor.”
She couldn’t just stand by and do nothing, but she also couldn’t come out and help Aunt Sun.
The best solution was Sheng Xian.
He was a lawyer with a high success rate. If Aunt Sun’s daughter hadn’t stolen the money, he could clear her name. If she truly had, he could minimize the consequences and give her a chance to reform, so a single mistake wouldn’t ruin her life.
Without waiting for a reaction from Sheng Xian, Lu Jingyan plowed ahead and explained Aunt Sun’s daughter’s situation to him.
Even though she was vague, Sheng Xian understood her intent, “You want me to step in and help your family’s Aunt, but you don’t want your Aunt to know it was you who sought me out behind the scenes?”
Lu Jingyan nodded slightly, “Yes, that’s correct.”
Sheng Xian was silent for a few seconds, “Why the secrecy?”
Lu Jingyan was stunned for a moment, then realized he was referring to her concealing her help for Aunt Sun.
She wouldn’t let anyone know whom she had helped.
It was precisely because she didn’t want Sheng Xian to know she wanted to help Aunt Sun that she had hesitated all night.
Lu Jingyan bit her lip, “Can I not say?”
There was no more sound from Sheng Xian’s end.
Lu Jingyan waited a while, then tentatively asked, “If I don’t say, does that mean you won’t help?”
Separated by a phone call, she couldn’t see his expression and couldn’t gauge his thoughts.
She understood his question—as would anyone else.
After all, this wasn’t a martial arts novel where one does good deeds without seeking recognition— the notion itself seemed ridiculous.
But she didn’t want to say.
Lu Jingyan, worried that Sheng Xian would insist on an answer, decided to nip it in the bud, “If you’re unhappy to help because I won’t tell you the reason, it’s okay. I can find someone else.”
Sheng Xian “tsked,” his voice light yet laden with distinct irritation, “Did I say I wouldn’t help?”
All he did was ask why, and she was already considering finding someone else. Wasn’t he even allowed to ask? She really had quite the temper.
Lu Jingyan blinked, thinking she hadn’t done anything wrong, and wondered why Professor Sheng’s tone was so unfriendly.
Besides, anyone would think he was unwilling to help if he stayed silent for so long.
Lu Jingyan curled her lip but before she could speak, Sheng Xian spoke again from the other end of the phone, “Aren’t you usually quite good at cajoling others? Why so mute all of a sudden?”
Lu Jingyan was perplexed, “Huh? What?”
Sheng Xian’s voice was indifferent yet pointed, “Just call me ‘Brother,’ and I’ll help.”
