Chapter 62 - 62 62 Im Here to Help You
?Chapter 62: Chapter 62: I’m Here to Help You Chapter 62: Chapter 62: I’m Here to Help You Lu Jingyan actually quite disliked this type of internet environment, but it was not something she could change by herself.
She didn’t know since when a person’s guilt was judged not by the law but by netizens.
Lu Jingyan closed the website, rested her chin on one hand, and absent-mindedly tapped the desk with the other as she stared out the window.
A while ago, the temperature in Beijing had dropped to a new low, and everyone preferred staying indoors. With temperatures rising over the past couple of days, especially today, the bright sunshine made the whole city look dazzling, easily giving rise to the desire to go out for a stroll.
Thinking back, she realized she had never seen Professor Sheng at work.
Lu Jingyan tilted her head in thought for a while, then grabbed her bag and coat and left the office early.
Maze Coffee wasn’t far from the office; Lu Jingyan’s drive over took just about fifteen minutes.
Worried that Ms. Sun might recognize her, she put on sunglasses and a mask before getting out of the car.
She ordered a latte at the cashier, picked up the pager, walked around the café, and eventually found Sheng Xian in the backmost part.
The sofa backs in the café were very high, acting like a series of low walls that separated each space.
Fortunately, no one was sitting behind Sheng Xian’s table, allowing Lu Jingyan to pick a seat with her back towards Sheng Xian.
Apart from Sheng Xian, Ms. Sun, her daughter, and a man who was probably Sheng Xian’s assistant were there.
Lu Jingyan wasn’t sure what they had discussed before she arrived. There seemed to be some discord between Ms. Sun and her daughter; Ms. Sun sounded agitated, even though she tried to keep her voice as low as possible, Lu Jingyan could still hear everything she said.
“This lawyer is a university professor, he’s very skilled. Whatever you have, just tell him directly, he will definitely help you,”
“Daughter, be honest with mom, did you take that money?”
“Mom really believed you at first, and mom wanted to keep believing you, but you won’t say anything, what do you want mom to do? Tell the lawyer where you got the money for your games and your new phone from,”
Ms. Sun’s daughter remained silent, which only made Ms. Sun more agitated until, finally, Sheng Xian’s assistant spoke, “Auntie, please calm down a bit. How about this, auntie, I’ll take you to the mall next door to distract you a bit, and let Professor Sheng talk with this student.”
Ms. Sun still wanted to talk.
The silent Sheng Xian looked up, “Go ahead.”
After a moment of silence, Ms. Sun said, “Thank you” to Sheng Xian and followed his assistant out.
Now only Sheng Xian and the young girl remained at the table.
Neither of them hurried to speak; after about ten seconds, Sheng Xian glanced at the empty cold drink cup in front of the girl, “Do you want to drink something else?”
The girl didn’t respond.
Sheng Xian raised his hand to signal a waiter and ordered a hot milk tea for the girl.
The waiter soon brought the milk tea over, and Sheng Xian gestured for it to be placed in front of the girl. After the waiter left, Sheng Xian added, “I am here to help you, you might consider trying to trust me.”
The girl still didn’t speak.
Lu Jingyan had always thought Sheng Xian was an indifferent and impatient person, yet she noticed he was quite gentle in his work.
To be precise, very professional.
“Can you briefly describe what you were doing on the day the money was lost?”
“Also, at school, how do you get along with your classmates? You and the student who lost the money, Yang, have you had any conflicts or misunderstandings?”
“Apart from the allowance from your mother, do you have any other sources of income, like tutoring or doing odd jobs?”
Sheng Xian tried several more times to communicate with Ms. Sun’s daughter, but each attempt bore no fruit.
Ms. Sun, worried about her daughter, was not willing to stay out for long and soon came back. Seeing that her daughter still refused to speak, she became both angry and anxious.
Continuing this stalemate was not solving anything.
Ms. Sun decided to take her daughter home first, to work things out mentally before contacting Sheng Xian again.
