Chapter 64 - 64 64 Supervision Work

?Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Supervision Work Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Supervision Work Lu Jingyan had buried his head even deeper now.

Fine, this time he really tucked his head under the table.

A smile that Sheng Xian himself hadn’t realized flashed in his eyes as he continued to tap on his phone.

A new message soon popped up on the phone Lu Jingyan was holding.

Sheng Xian: “Mind your head.”

Lu Jingyan: “…”

He had already been caught; hiding was pointless now.

Lu Jingyan took a deep breath, calmly raised his head, and met Sheng Xian’s gaze, “I just wanted to see bro…”

Lu Jingyan opened his mouth, then got stuck.

It had always been just her own awkward secret crush on “brother.” If she stopped now, it would only make Sheng Xian suspicious.

Lu Jingyan swallowed, her ears slightly burning as she averted her head: “…Brother, can you recognize me?”

Sheng Xian: “…”

Elementary school students sure can recite well.

“As it turns out, brother can still recognize me,” Lu Jingyan paused, then looked back at Sheng Xian again, “Brother, what if I turn into ashes?”

“Would you still be able to recognize me?”

“In novels, the male leads can always recognize the female leads even if they turn to ashes.”

Sheng Xian looked down at her for two seconds without responding to her wild talk: “How did you get here?”

Lu Jingyan drawled an “Ah,” remembering that earlier she wasn’t actually asking him about the progress of Aunt Sun’s daughter’s matter, but he had thought so, and spontaneously replied: “Didn’t you send me the address? I thought you wanted me to come and supervise your work.”

“Let’s go then,” Sheng Xian moved aside to clear the path between the sofa and the table.

Lu Jingyan: “Ah?”

Sheng Xian glanced at the clearly confused Lu Jingyan, speaking in an indifferent tone: “Aren’t you here to supervise work?”

Lu Jingyan, carrying her bag, followed Sheng Xian out of the coffee shop, only then realizing the hidden meaning in his previous words: “But your work is already done, isn’t it? Aunt Sun’s daughter has left, what else do you have to do?”

“Going to check around her school and their neighborhood.”

“Oh.”

Neither spoke again as they walked to the roadside. Sheng Xian looked around, spotted Lu Jingyan’s car, and extended his hand towards her: “Car keys.”

Lu Jingyan opened her bag, rummaged through it, and handed him the keys.

Once in the car, Lu Jingyan suddenly remembered what Sheng Xian had said to his assistant before sending him away, “Someone will drive.”

So his ‘someone to drive’ meant Lu Jingyan?

He really knew how to arrange things.

Lu Jingyan pursed her lips and fastened her seatbelt.

Lu Jingyan had watched countless legal dramas and always thought those scenes where lawyers visit the life environments of the parties involved were exaggerated. She never expected that it was actually like this in real life.

Sheng Xian went to Aunt Sun’s daughter’s school and talked to several of her classmates to understand some situations.

Most of it revolved around topics like the girl’s performance at school and whether she had conflicts with anyone.

There were both boys and girls.

Lu Jingyan couldn’t join in the conversation, so she just listened on the side. She thought the content of Sheng Xian’s conversations was quite normal and couldn’t detect any issues, but Sheng Xian recorded all these conversations with a voice recorder.

After leaving school, the two of them went to Aunt Sun’s house.

They lived in an old city area, which was a bit rundown, and cars couldn’t drive through, so the two of them walked along the alley to get there.

Although it was pretty cold, there were still a few people coming out of the building to walk their dogs.

Sheng Xian stopped each one and asked a few questions, and quite by chance, one of them was a neighbor of Aunt Sun’s family.

Sheng Xian asked a few simple questions about what Aunt Sun’s usual situation was like, how the relationship between the mother and daughter was, and what Aunt Sun’s daughter was like.

This neighbor was a middle-aged woman who seemed very cheerful and could talk a lot. She chatted with Sheng Xian, praising Aunt Sun’s daughter continuously, saying how considerate she was and how difficult it was for her mom to raise her alone. She started helping her mom with household chores at a very young age, and also mentioned that before her mom started working as a hourly worker for the wealthy, she used to run a street stall outside the neighborhood, where Aunt Sun’s daughter would often sit by the stall reading a book under the flashlight.

At the end of the conversation, the neighbor sighed, “Such a good girl, why would she steal something from someone?”

Actually, the classmates at school also had a good opinion about Aunt Sun’s daughter—simple, diligent, and not talkative. She didn’t really like to go out to parties with classmates and was frugal to the point of being stingy. Those classmates, like the neighbor, were also very puzzled about how such a good student ended up stealing money.

Aunt Sun lived on the second floor. After the neighbor left, suddenly there was a noise of argument coming from the second floor, carrying down the stairway where the motion-sensor lights illuminated the whole building.

The houses here were old, and the soundproofing was not very good. Sheng Xian recognized that it was Aunt Sun’s voice.

“Tell me, who is that old man? Have you been learning bad things behind my back?!”

“Is that money from that old man? Do you know how hard it has been to raise you? Why would you do this?!”

Sheng Xian looked at Lu Jingyan next to her, “I’ll go up and have a look.”

Lu Jingyan muttered an “okay” and retreated a few steps, leaning against a bare tree trunk.

No sooner had Sheng Xian entered the building than someone came running out.

It was Aunt Sun’s daughter.

She didn’t look at anyone, and in the blink of an eye, she was gone.

Seeing Sheng Xian hadn’t followed her out, Lu Jingyan watched the direction in which Aunt Sun’s daughter had run for a while, sighed, and stood up to follow.

Outside the alley, Lu Jingyan saw Aunt Sun’s daughter standing by the roadside, staring intently at the bustling traffic.

She clenched her clothes in her hand, hesitated for a moment as though making up her mind, and then stepped towards the middle of the road.

In a chorus of honking horns, Lu Jingyan grabbed Aunt Sun’s daughter’s arm and forcefully pulled her back to safety.

Due to the excessive force, Lu Jingyan’s back slammed against a street lamp, causing her to gasp in pain and curse before straightening up and immediately slapping Aunt Sun’s daughter across the face without saying a word.

Aunt Sun’s daughter was dazed by the slap and it took her a while to blink and look towards Lu Jingyan.

Lu Jingyan released Aunt Sun’s daughter’s arm, moved half a step aside, and stood up straight, looking down at her condescendingly, “If you want to die, there are plenty of ways. You could drown, take pills, jump off a building, or slit your wrists!”

Lu Jingyan continued stepping closer to Aunt Sun’s daughter, “But don’t drag innocent people down with you.”

As Lu Jingyan approached, Aunt Sun’s daughter slowly retreated.

Aunt Sun’s daughter was trapped by a tree, forced to press tightly against the trunk.

Lu Jingyan’s shoe tip stopped right at Aunt Sun’s daughter’s shoe tip.

She looked down with indifferent eyes at Aunt Sun’s daughter’s panicked face, her tone still as harsh as if she was about to kill someone, “They want to live a good life, they don’t deserve to be dragged into this disaster because of you.”

“So if you want to die, please find an empty place to do it quietly. Don’t make a scene here.”

Aunt Sun’s daughter opened her mouth, but no sound came out.

A hint of contempt flickered in Lu Jingyan’s eyes, “Oh, there is actually someone in this world who is willing to endure this sudden disaster with you.”

“Your mother.”

“Think about it, it wouldn’t be bad. If you died, your mother would surely be devastated. You could keep each other company on the way to the underworld. Neither of you would be lonely.”
