?61: Chapter 49 Death of Pannis_1 61: Chapter 49 Death of Pannis_1 (Here goes the second update for the day.
However, during these forthcoming few days, there will be no double updates, indeed.
As per usual, PS, dear reader, if you happen to pass by, please give it a favorite, a recommendation.

“Save me, save me.” Gaston’s flesh had completely rotted and fallen off, leaving behind muscles oozing a foul-smelling yellowish-green pus.
Regardless, he still reached out to Rachel with his broken hand, crying hoarsely, “My dear, save me, please save me.”
Rachel silently watched as Gaston struggled, lost in her thoughts.
Suddenly, she turned to Lina and asked, “Can he be saved?”
Lina shook her head slowly.
“I’ve already checked.
This is a rotting curse.
It was planted in him several days ago.
After this long, there’s nothing I can do.”
Rachel sadly sighed softly.
She crouched down next to Gaston, disregarding the pus and blood on his body, and held his hand.
“I’m sorry, Gaston.
I can’t save you.”
“Save me, I know I was wrong, I’ll never do it again, please save me.” Gaston’s eyes began to cloud over as he spoke in agony.
Rachel wrapped her arm around Gaston’s shoulder, letting him lean into her.
She shook her head regretfully.
“I’m sorry, Gaston.
I really can’t do it.”
“I don’t want to die, I want to live.” Tears seeped from Gaston’s now eyelid-less eyes; his voice was hollow and desperate.
“Am I really going to die?”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” Rachel softly said as she took a dagger from her waist, “I can only accompany you to the end, to end your suffering.
That’s the only thing I can do for you.”
“If so, then…” Gaston’s voice was hoarse; almost unrecognizable, but he still managed to utter his last words: “Let’s die together.” He gathered his remaining strength to lift his head and bit into Rachel’s throat.
Rachel neither dodged nor resisted but silently endured the suffocating sensation of her windpipe being squeezed and the pain of her skin being torn by teeth.
Her hands were still wrapped around Gaston and did not let go.
Fortunately, most of the muscles in Gaston’s face had already rotted away, so he couldn’t bite through Rachel’s throat or cause her to suffocate.
A moment later, his remaining facial muscles could no longer hold onto Rachel.
His eyes filled with reluctance and despair, and his skull, now exposed, fell back into Rachel’s arms.
Even though most of his body was exposed to the bone, he still wasn’t dead.
His limbs were convulsing in agony.
Rachel half-closed her eyes, big drops of tears falling, and without regard for the stench, she kissed Gaston’s skull and with the final kiss, drove her dagger into Gaston’s chest, “Goodbye, my once-beloved.”
With the dagger piercing his heart, Gaston’s painful convulsions finally stopped.
His limbs dropped, lifeless and silent.
Rachel wiped her tears, stood up and met Nicole’s numb gaze, “Nicole, I will repay you what I owe you.”
“Clap, clap, clap.” The short man in the white coat had been silently watching Rachel’s actions.
He clapped his hands lightly and lamented in an affected tone, “Such a moving scene!
Even I am reluctant to kill you.
Unfortunately, you all have to die.”
“Who are you?” Catherine asked, “Why are you attacking us?”
“Who am I?
Hahaha…” The short man seemed to have been holding his tongue for too long and started rambling incessantly, “I can’t believe you’re asking who I am?
You invaded my territory, took my stuff, shouldn’t I be the one asking who you are?”
“This is your territory?
Who are you?” Catherine asked in surprise.
“Of course this is my territory.
I’m Farkas, I’m the Captain of the Naren Kingdom’s guard, I’m the Deputy Captain of the rescue team, my word is law here.” Farkas laughed manically.
“You’re lying,” Catherine declared coolly, “You’re human.
Humans can’t live for so long.”
“Stupid.” Farkas laughed coldly, “You short-sighted, naive fools.
Under God’s will, I’ve become the perfect organism.
Of course, I can live for so long.”
“God’s will?” Catherine seemed not to understand.
“Of course.” Farkas boasted, proud of his achievement: “Back then, I was a mere Beginner Gold Rank.
I was gravely injured as my group advanced to this vicinity, so I chose a random room to await death.
Unexpectedly, I entered here and discovered a potion frozen in this place.
After drinking the potion, the wounds on my body miraculously healed.
Moreover, when I was frozen here, as the cold energy was destroying my body, the potion was constantly repairing the damaged parts, keeping me alive all the while.
If this isn’t a miracle, what is?”
“How did you manage to survive for so long?” Catherine asked.
“Are you trying to trick me into revealing more?
Hahaha, it doesn’t matter, you’re all going to die anyway.” Farkas continued chattering, “Back then, I was on the brink of demonic transformation.
Even though my wounds had healed, it was still very difficult for me to survive.
Hence, when I found out that this place was a freezing chamber, I froze myself and fell into deep sleep.
Surprisingly, twenty years later, I woke up from the freeze and found that I had neither died nor had I become demonized.
The potion prevented me from freezing to death, and the freeze stopped my aging and demonic transformation.
Moreover, I discovered that the Teleportation Array at the exit had completely malfunctioned, essentially turning this place into my own.
Hahaha.
So, I continued my pattern of waking for a few days every twenty years, until ten years ago, when my body had completely adapted to the surrounding Demonized Energy and was no longer at risk of becoming demonic.
I freed myself from the perpetual cycle.
Now as you see me, I have not only maintained my human identity, but I also possess the heightened powers due to the Demonized Energy.
This is humanity’s future.”
“Hehe, you’re nothing but a prisoner here.” Catherine sneered, “You can’t even leave this place, yet you claim that it belongs to you.”
“I can’t leave?
The Teleportation Array to the outside is right behind me.
I can also break the ice layer at the entrance to leave, otherwise how could you guys have seen me outside?” Farkas, who was apparently not quick-witted, paused: “Did you trick me into revealing that?
Doesn’t matter.
Do you think you have a chance to defeat me and leave alive?
Hahaha, here’s some good news for you.
I can integrate with the mana of the entire institute; here, I am invincible.”
“Really, after being demonized, even if Divine Wisdom is retained through freezing, one would still lose their intelligence just like magical creatures, and become this stupid.” Pannis sighed, mocking: “All the paper-related items in the rooms were collected by you, weren’t they?
You were trying to understand this place through these clues, weren’t you?
The corpses were also collected by you, right?
For these centuries, when you woke up, you must have found the taste of the corpses quite satisfactory.
This place entirely belongs to you?
You’re still human?
Hahaha, so funny.
You’re nothing but a magical creature who’s retained some Divine Wisdom, pretending to be human.”
The expression on Farkas’ face darkened, as he stared coldly at Pannis: “You will pay for your words.”
“Really?” Pannis was unconcerned, shrugging: “Why did you bring us here?
Clearly, only in this room can you integrate with the energy of the entire institute.
If we leave the room, you won’t be a match for us.
Don’t worry.
After you die, I will erect a tomb for you.
The epitaph will read: Cause of Death: excessive talking.”
“Hahaha.” Farkas laughed out loud: “Do you think I’ll let you leave?
The door is already locked.
If you want to exit, you’ll need my permission.”
“Who knows if we don’t give it a try?” Pannis calmly stated.
“Then you should give it a try.” Even before Farkas could finish speaking, he suddenly moved with a speed invisible to the naked eye, darting beside Pannis throwing a punch at him.
“Boom”, Catherine arrived just in time, using her Falcon Shield to directly block Farkas’ fist without taking a step back.
Nonetheless, the impact caused her to bleed a little from the corner of her mouth.
“Be careful, what he said is true.
He is much stronger than when he was outside.” Catherine held up her shield on guard, watching Farkas without blinking.
“Of course, it’s true, hahaha, embrace your fate of death.” Farkas’ figure blinked and he eerily appeared beside Lina intending to launch an attack when he abruptly exclaimed in surprise.
He moved back a few steps, avoiding Lina’s hammer swing and cast a strange look at Pannis who simply shifted his stance a little.
Ignoring Pannis, Farkas drew his sword and aimed it at Vivian’s petite figure as he instantly charged towards her, saying, “I’ll start with you.” Halfway through the charge, he gasped in surprise once again.
His body moved weirdly to one side as he glared at Pannis who had again shifted his position: “Are you a Thorn?”
“What do you think?” Pannis suddenly revealed a mysterious smile.
“Whether you’re a Thorn or not doesn’t matter.” A vicious smile spread across Farkas’ face beneath his mask: “It no longer matters now.” As he spoke, he completely ignored the girls who had adapted to his rhythm and launched consecutive attacks on him.
He headed straight towards Pannis.
Catherine raised her shield, taking a few steps to shield Pannis, only to find him circling around her to confront Farkas.
“Boom.” Their sinister forms intermingled for a moment before separating.
Farkas staggered back a few steps while Pannis, with a large footprint embedded on his chest and a thick cloud of black mist surrounding his body, crashed heavily against the wall at the entrance.
With a malicious glint in his eyes, Farkas extended his hand and made a grasping gesture towards Pannis who was pinned against the wall.
The black mist covering Pannis suddenly surged and in a moment, he exploded from within.
His body disintegrated into shards, turning into a dense cloud of blood.
“Pannis…” After having bonded with him over the last few days and considering him as a trusted teammate, both Lina and Vivian shrieked upon witnessing Pannis’ grim fate, somewhat dumbstruck by the gruesome sight.
Only Catherine managed to stay calm, stepping up to shield Lina from another attack, as she said loudly, “Stay alert, don’t despair; trust him, and the words he said.”
“What words?” Lina seemed confused.
“He once said, ‘I will not die.'” Catherine wasn’t completely confident, but recalling Pannis’ actions just now, she chose to trust him, “So, he must not have died.
Let’s keep fighting.
We can’t let him look down on us when he comes back.”
