Chapter 796: Pointy Hat (Ko-fi Bonus Chapter)

Chapter 796: Pointy Hat (Ko-fi Bonus Chapter)

Despite the heavy rainfall, the guards continued to patrol the city walls, constantly looking out for any dangers.

Suddenly, one of the men standing guard at the city entrance pointed towards a figure walking on the wide road and slowly approaching them.

"Hey, someone's coming," he said, alerting his comrades. "Be on guard."

A few minutes later, the guards found themselves subconsciously loosening their grips around their weapons.

"Old sir, why are you traveling in such weather? You'll catch a cold!" One of the guys ushered the old man into the small outpost by the towering city gates.

The old man sported white hair and beard. He had a hunched back that made him appear much shorter than he actually was. His face was covered in wrinkles and age spots, making him appear frail and harmless.

Hearing the guard's comment, the old man reprimanded. "Who are you calling old! I am a Mana Foundation Magus, and still in the springtime of my youth!"

"Yes, yes, my lord," the guard muttered in exasperation. "Now, please write your personal information in the register."

"Hmph, I am still young!" The old man harrumphed. He put down the items he was carrying and wrote his information with a shaky hand.

Seeing his feeble actions, the guards in the outpost glanced at each other awkwardly. One of them stepped forward and asked, "My Lord, what brings you to Moon City?"

"I am a traveler, young lad," said the old Magus. "I have been traveling the Federation for the last decade. Moon City is the last on my list."

He flashed a warm and gentle smile. "I wish to see the splendor of the Lunar Bridge before I die."

Hearing those words, the guards present couldn't help but feel complicated emotions. The respect and pride they had for their city seemed to have increased significantly in that moment.

After registering his personal information, the old man turned around to leave. One of the guards stopped him, "Sir, how long are you planning to stay in the city?"

"A few days at most," said the old man. With that, he walked out of the outpost.

"Sir!" Again, another guard called out to him.

"What?!" The old man snapped, furiously staring at the guard.

The guard pointed to the table and spoke sheepishly, "You… forgot your things."

"Ah." The old man tapped his head and laughed awkwardly. "I am starting to grow senile, hoho!"

He walked towards the table and strapped the satchel around his shoulder. Then, he grabbed the black pointy hat and put it on his head.

The wide brim of the hat masked the mischievous smirk that formed on the old man's face. He then glanced at all the guards present and bid farewell. "Alright, lads. I shall be on my way to the Lunar Bridge!"

With that, he turned around and exited the outpost. As he walked past the city gates, he muttered under his breath, just loud enough for the guards to hear.

"I've heard rumors that the Dark King has placed an inheritance near the Lunar Bridge. Perhaps, I can get lucky in my old age. Hoho!"

Hearing his words, the guards stationed at the city gates couldn't help but chuckle amongst themselves.

In the past few months, there had been a sudden influx of tourists in the city. Some came here, claiming to be relatives of the Dark King. Some came here, wanting to see the city that this renowned Magus spent his academic years in.

While others, much like this old Magus, came here hoping to find secret inheritances left behind by the Dark King.

They did not know just where rumors such as that originated from, but something like this was inevitable considering the wide fame of the Dark King.

In the end, such rumors helped boost the economy of Moon City as countless people from across the Southern Federation flocked towards the city.

Standing on the familiar cobbled streets of Moon City, Adam, now under the disguise of a decrepit old man, looked around at the roadside stalls and the residents with a reminiscent look in his eyes.

It has been a while, he thought.

But his expression soon turned grave.

It wasn't time for sightseeing. He needed to investigate Anna's whereabouts, and for that, he had to be prudent in his actions.

He had already planned on how to do that. He only needed to be patient. He lowered his head, allowing the brim of his hat to conceal the peculiar light flashing in his eyes.

Anna, I truly hope you're okay...

Soon, he disappeared amidst the sea of people.

He patiently waited for the moment to strike.

The same night, the head of the city guards, Deon, finished his night duties and headed towards the heart of the city with his subordinates.

"Boss, let's go for a drink, shall we?" Said one of the guards excitedly.

Deon smiled, "Not today. I have to get back home to my family."

It took the guard captain a few minutes to convince his subordinates before he was able to go his separate way.

His life had become quite hectic ever since word started to spread that the Dark King hailed from Moon City. Since then, tourists from all over the Federation swarmed towards the city, thus increasing his work load.

"At least the Royal Family has increased our weekly wages," he said while yawning out loud.

It was past midnight, and the streets were relatively empty. He couldn't wait to go home and dive into the warm embrace of his wife.

Thinking of that, his lips curled into an eager smile.

Suddenly, the smile on his face froze.

For a moment, his expression twisted, then returned to normal. His eyes glazed over, and without a word, he changed direction and headed into a nearby dark alley.

Deon walked until he reached the dead end of the alley. Then, he simply stood there in a daze.

In the next moment, a pair of aged hands emerged from the darkness and softly clasped his head from behind.

Then, a silhouette of a figure wearing a pointy hat appeared behind the city guard.

Deon's expression shifted, and in the next instant, the face of a stunning woman with crimson hair was reflected in his eyes.

Then, a cold and emotionless voice slithered into his mind.

"Tell me… have you seen her?"
