Chapter 797: Oddly Whimsical (Ko-fi Bonus Chapter)
Adam sat in the outer seating arrangement at one of the many cafes near Moon City's skyport.
"Sir, this is the meat pie you ordered," a teenage girl, who worked for the cafe, brought the steaming dish and placed it on the table.
Adam reached out with his trembling hand and gently patted the little girl on the head, "Hoho, thank you, little one."
The teenager smiled warmly at him before heading back inside the cafe. The moment she left, Adam's expression changed.
He absentmindedly started eating the meat pie as he thought back to the results of his investigation last night.
After interrogating over a dozen city guards with spells from the School of Enchantment, he learned that Anna, along with three other Magi, had indeed come to Moon City.
He also learned that after staying in the guest house within the Clover Academy's campus grounds for about a week, Anna and her group were personally escorted to the city's skyport by Headmistress Godfrey.
It's strange, he thought.
By all rights, the Headmistress should have made a move on Anna. Since I've confirmed that she is working for the Cult, I can assume that she already knows about the Cult Leader's interest in me.
If so, then she should have captured Anna and tried to deal with me. But she didn't…
That could only mean two things.
Adam conjured a large gourd of wine and a flat cup from his earrings, and placed them on the table. With a deep frown on his face, he poured the wine into the cup and sipped from it from time to time.
First, the Headmistress does not know about the Cult Leader's interest in me, and thus, she did not act.
However, I find this to be rather unlikely.
He grabbed the flat cup and took another sip from it. His eyes narrowed, and he thought of the second possible outcome.
There is a powerful Magus traveling alongside Anna. If my guess is right, it should be that old man.
Adam thought this was likely to be the case. If there was a Rank 3 - Mana Vortex Magus traveling with Anna, then the Headmistress would be wise enough not to act.
After all, in a battle against a Mana Vortex Magus and three Mana Liquefaction Magi, it was highly likely that she would fail.
He turned his head in the direction of Clover Academy. His eyes narrowed further, and a vicious glint flashed past them.
No, I must be patient. I cannot act now.
Adam shook his head and turned towards the skyport again. Seeing the many flying dirigibles docked at this section of the city, as well as the ones that were taking off every hour, he couldn't help but be moved.
The Grand Magus Tournament is a far bigger event than I had expected, he thought.
People from all over the continent are headed towards Ravenfell. I wonder how everyone is doing there.
His expression turned grave when he thought about another important point.
The most renowned Magi will be gathering in Ravenfell.
Moreover, the brightest students of the Four Pillars of the Empire, the future of the continent, will be participating in the tournament.
I cannot think of a better time to attack if I were the enemy, he thought.
And I'm sure if I can think of this, then so can the Headmaster as well as the old fogies of the Brotherhood.
I have a bad feeling about this…
The Grand Magus Tournament is no longer a competition between the Four Pillars of the Empire, but something far greater.
It is a clash between two ancient and powerful secret organizations!
Adam placed the cup on the table and leaned back in his chair. He gazed at the lazy clouds drifting in the blue sky and couldn't help but sigh.
This was the only moment of respite he was going to get. He knew that once he reached Ravenfell, he would be diving headfirst into a brutal war between the Twilight Brotherhood and the Cult of Bones.
He needed to be prepared for that moment.
But there are still a couple of places I need to visit before returning to Ravenfell, he thought to himself as he got up from his seat.
He placed a silver coin on the table and left. Now that he had confirmed that Anna had, in fact, safely left Moon City and departed for Ravenfell, he was greatly relieved.
Now, he could carry out his other tasks with a peaceful mind. He wasn't in a hurry to meet Anna, for he knew their meeting was inevitable.
He would first finish what he had come here to do and then return to Ravenfell.
As the figure of the hunched old man gradually moved towards the main gate of South Ward, he momentarily stopped in front of a store in the market district.
The store's exterior was in disrepair and looked utterly decrepit. Moreover, the entrance was secured with heavy chains. It seemed like the store had been shut for several years.
Adam's gaze drifted upward to the wooden plaque above the doorway. Two simple words were carved into it.
"Herbs & More," Adam whispered, his voice laced with emotion.
His footsteps only halted for a moment before he continued in the direction of the city gates. It was time he traveled towards his next destination.
As Adam exited the city gates, he turned back around and gazed in the general direction of Herbs & More.
Hang in there, old man…
The hunched figure finally turned and walked off into the distance, leaving the Jewel of the South behind.
…
Glassford, Southern Federation.
Two weeks later, Adam finally arrived at his destination. This city was located in the western part of the Federation.
It was a one-of-a-kind city and was jointly established and governed by the four major races in the Federation.
There was only one main reason why this city didn't come under the rule of a single race, and that was because it was directly tied to the well-being and strength of the Federation's economy.
Glassford was home to the only secret plane in the Southern Federation.
Mounted atop Luna, Adam moved towards the central square. Night had fallen, and the light from Selene and Luna cast a dim glow over the city.
The sound of hooves tapping on the cobblestones echoed throughout the area, yet no one nearby could hear it.
Adam had cast a concealment spell on himself and Luna, after all.
The pair arrived at the center of the cobblestoned square. Adam instructed Luna to halt as he expanded his Sphere of Resonance, ensuring that there wasn't any danger nearby.
After confirming that it was indeed safe, he flicked his hand and conjured an ivory playing card from his earrings.
Seeing the image of a joker intricately carved on the card, Adam's lips curled into an expectant smile.
The next moment, he injected his mana into the card, causing it to glow with blinding light.
Then, the space around him started to subtly distort, causing Luna to flinch in alarm. Moments later, the distortion intensified, twisting and turning, until it engulfed them completely.
And just like that, they were gone!
…
At the exact moment Adam infused mana into the calling card and vanished from the material world, a mystical ripple spread across the spatial barrier of the Soaring Rivers Secret Plane.
Sensing this disturbance, an ancient yet oddly whimsical existence in the heart of the secret plane suddenly opened his eyes.
It took but a moment for the being to sense the newcomer's arrival within the secret plane. Upon confirming the newcomer's identity, a wide grin gradually stretched across his face.
"Fafafa! The prodigal son returns!"
