Chapter 28 - 28 28 Are You Scared

?Chapter 28: Chapter 28 Are You Scared? Chapter 28: Chapter 28 Are You Scared? Sheng Xian held the menu for a long while before realizing what he had done and let out a sigh with a hand pressed against his temple.

Sheng Xian, are you out of your mind?

What are you taking a menu home for?

When December arrived, Lu Jingyan was particularly busy, especially with the company’s end-of-year celebration that left her head spinning.

Ever since she had bumped into Sheng Xian at the university gate, she hadn’t seen Sheng Xian for most of the following half-month.

Not just Sheng Xian, she had only seen Song Xian and Chen Kai once as well.

The celebration took place in the evening and many people were invited. Lu Jingyan had booked a hotel near the venue for the guests who were invited from all over.

The day before was extremely busy for her. Lu Jingyan stayed at the hotel that evening, as she had an early appointment the next day at the restaurant on the top floor.

After the meeting, as she was about to leave the restaurant, she received a call from Lu Hongcheng.

The restaurant faced an outdoor garden café, which was open in spring, summer, and fall but closed in winter due to the cold.

Lu Jingyan crossed the railing and walked to the end of the garden to answer Lu Hongcheng’s call.

“I have a lunch appointment with Mr. Yang tomorrow, you come over and apologize to him.”

In the past half-month, Lu Hongcheng had come back twice. His attitude toward her was neither good nor bad, and he hadn’t mentioned her blind date incident again.

Lu Jingyan thought Lu Hongcheng would let the matter go like before, but she never expected him to take it so seriously this time.

Lu Jingyan had a ton of things to deal with today, lacking the mood to argue with Lu Hongcheng over this matter. Thinking it was something to be dealt with tomorrow anyway, she hummed and hawed to brush Lu Hongcheng off on the phone.

Putting away her phone, she was about to head back inside when she heard screaming from behind: “You filthy whore.”

What followed was the sound of a loud slap.

Upon looking, Lu Jingyan saw two middle-aged people fighting with one another.

They appeared to be a married couple.

The scuffle was actually one-sided; it was the husband beating the wife, who was merely trying to protect herself from his blows.

The words spilling from the husband’s mouth were vile as the wife cried and begged for mercy. Far from letting up, he escalated his assault with punches and kicks.

The outdoor garden had many green plants wrapped in frost cloth, and Lu Jingyan was well hidden behind them, unnoticed by the quarreling couple.

The husband was striking particularly hard, aiming for his wife’s vulnerable spots with each blow.

Lu Jingyan watched quietly, her face completely indifferent.

She showed no intention whatsoever to intervene.

Nor did she have any intention of calling the police.

It was as if the scene before her was playing out on a TV drama, utterly unrelated to her.

After about ten minutes of assaulting his wife, the husband finally grew tired and stopped. He spat out a string of abusive language at his wife, adjusted his clothes, and walked away, leaving the wife curled up on the ground, softly whimpering in tears.

Lu Jingyan had planned to wait until the wife’s crying ceased and she had left before coming out of hiding.

Little did she know that the abused wife’s crying seemed to have no end.

Not dressed for such an extended outdoor stay, and feeling bitterly cold, Lu Jingyan cursed under her breath and stepped out from her hiding spot.

The wife, taken by surprise to find someone hidden in the garden, immediately stopped crying upon seeing her.

Her eyes looked pitiful, helpless, and full of pleas for assistance.

Expressionless, Lu Jingyan met her gaze briefly, then dismissively turned away and walked past her.

To Lu Jingyan, the incident was like a fleeting interlude that in no way affected her busy day.

At noon, while she was discussing matters in the lobby, she encountered the same couple again, both dressed conspicuously in finery. The wife, with a smile on her face, clung to her husband’s arm, looking harmonious and affectionate.

Lu Jingyan couldn’t help but take a second look, causing the person sitting across from her to call out in surprise, “President Lu?”

Lu Jingyan withdrew her gaze, uttered an apology, and lifted her coffee to hide the sneer twitching at the corner of her mouth.

At seven in the evening, the annual celebration officially began and didn’t end until nine-thirty.

Then came the dinner party, which was for key associates, held at the hotel’s third-floor Chinese restaurant.

As the host, Lu Jingyan made a brief speech and just as she sat down, her phone buzzed from inside her bag.

It was a private message from Emotion.

The anonymous sender had sent a photo.

It was of her standing on stage, delivering the opening speech.

“Lu Jingyan, you do look quite good now.”

“Do you think they would still respectfully call you President Lu if they knew about your past?”

Lu Jingyan surged to her feet and scanned the room.

At that moment, the doors of the Chinese restaurant opened, and Bo Mu, in a purple evening gown and wrapped in a mink coat, stepped out.

Without a second thought, Lu Jingyan followed her out.

Bo Mu entered the restroom, and she followed her in.

While walking, she tapped on her screen to reply to the mysterious message: “Who are you?”

Anon: “Guess who I am?”

She saw Bo Mu using her phone.

To be more certain, Lu Jingyan continued: “Who are you, really? If you dare, come out and stop hiding behind your phone.”

Bo Mu’s phone chimed.

Lu Jingyan saw her tapping on her phone again, and shortly after, a message arrived on her own phone.

Anon: “Are you afraid?”
